Ever since my husband has been on this diet (since last September), he has had problems with hard, painful stools. He has tried Citrucel, stool softeners, Fiber Choice, and extra magnesium and Vitamin C. He eats a large salad every day for lunch, and of course high fiber breads and cereals, and veggies at dinner. He is extremely discouraged. Has anyone had this experience, or is there any advice?
Thanks in advance. |

have you tried senakot or colace stool softener?

| that was my thought too Kim. With 4-5 cups of veggies, fruits (have you tried dried apricots or dried plums?), 1/2 cup of beans, and whole grains daily, I don't know what else it could be? |

| Taking magnesium will definetely help with elimination, but in order to absorb the extra magnesium it's nessasary to supplement with potassium as well. When I'm having problems I take equal amounts of magnesium and potassium tablets in the morning, and then a powdered magnesium in warm water at night. Powdered Vitamin C helps as well. |

| I recommend Miralax and a Colace. I have chronic constipation and these have helped. They both are available over the counter. Miralax is different then other laxatives in that it uses the body's own water to increase the frequency of bowel movements and to soften the stool. Colace is a stool softener which does not contain any stimulant and it allows water and fats to enter the stool, making for easier bowel movements. I don't recommend any laxatives or stool softeners which contain stimulants as your body adjusts to these causing dependence on same. |
