There is no "diet" that works in 3 days, 5 days or 2 weeks. It's just waaaay too early to be pushing a panic button over reality vs. perceived expectations. Honestly, before anyone makes any kind of decision about the program, they should go through P1, the 4-6 transition period into P2 and probably at least another month of a "normal" P2 eating plan which really is your eating plan for the rest of your life at that point along with regular exercise, before they make any kind of decision as to whether it is "working" for them or not. So basically give it a 3 month trial period with your best effort and see where you are. At that point, you can really begin to make a better assessment about what the program is really all about and whether it will work for you on a long term basis. It's impossible to make that determination within the first 2 weeks with any kind of confidence, because you simply haven't even really started learning what the program is about. P1 is just a short prepatory phase and whether you lose weight at all or how much you lose relative to your perceived expecations is completely irrelevant in the greater scheme of things.

I have been reading this site for some time now and decided it was time to join in on the conversations. I had read the SBD book from the library and then started doing some research on this site to see how everyone is doing.
The book doesn't go into detail very much and I find that very diffcult, I started my Phase 1 journey and I am not happy with my results so far.
Like everyone else on this topic I have only lost 1 pound :( I have not cheated at all. So am stuck and don't know what to do  I along with many other would love to lose anywhere brtween 8-13 pounds.
So what's the secret on why is it working on some and not others, any ideas would be greatly appreciated :!:

So what SBD Book should I be reading that will give me and others the most information to be successful :?:

Thanks

The book is probably as specific as it can be considering that everyone is different and needs to find the right combination of diet and exercise for their particular circumstances and body. The diet was written for obese heart patients and the results that they enjoyed were more dramatic than what many people that now do the program experience. 8-13lbs is the exception, not the rule. The only thing you can do is keep moving forward and trying to do your best.

You might find this blog page insightful! ;)

If there is a secret it is simply longevity, consitency and a willingness to continue to press forward and make good choices every day, day in and day out, whether an inanimate object is validating your progress or not.

I think the meal planning templates and foods lists in the FAQ pages provide some additional details the book doesn't do a very good job with, but the plan is largely an experiential one based on trial and error and finding what, within the overall larger framework, works for you. You are your own best guide and teacher.

What works for one person might not work for another. You have to try an array of foods and see which ones affect you. For me I cut out bread completley. I eat lots of protein like eggs, fish, poultry, and beef. I also do not drink milk but make up for it in yogurt and cottage cheese as a snack mixing the two together and adding nuts and fruit to it. I also eat lots of vegetables. I also eat about 5-6 times a day. I also drink coffee because of caffeine which speeds up metabolism but only two cups a day. Also i take a multi vitamin and fish oil pills along with flaxseed. It seems to be going well. I have lost 24 pounds in alittle over 5 weeks. But nobody probably eats like I do. I used to eat all kinds of crap but it is up to the person to do it. You cannot give in. You can't say well i'll just have one slice of cake. Eating that cake is going two steps backward and after all that work it might take three days to lose that cake. I say strichter the better in the begining and later on eat some good stuff in moderation.

I went with the book and lost at least 2 pounds a day. Are you exercising along with sticking to the diet. Don't think of the South Beach Diet as a diet. It's a new way of life.

You lost 2 pounds a day??? Really? That doesn't sound healthy.

I'm successful at losing a few pounds right now (phase one), but it's not anywhere near what I expected. I chalk it up to not having much in the way of belly fat or water weight to lose. Actually, I think it's great if you don't have water weight to lose! You must have been doing something right before the diet :) I agree with previous posters who say that this is more of a way of living that teaches you the correct ways to think about and deal with food. Give it a little while longer. From what I read on here, phase one is soooooooo unpredictable for losing weight :)

I'm pretty young, I'm only twenty years old. But I have not been quite healthy, I would go through periods where I tried to be very strict with myself, and would get nowhere, and go straight to point a, eating unhealthy. I mean my god I would start my mornings with a huge glass of milk with 3-4 slices of white toasted bread with Nuggatti(its like peanut butter, only its chocolate. So I started the South beach 10 days ago with intentions to loose weight, but I am no a big weight obsessed person. So i didnt weight myself before, nor will I do it. For me the point of this diet is to get to a point where I feel well, I dont want to be obsessed with the pounds. I can tell that I have lost, as clothes fit me looser, but still. I feel if that I start to put focus on just the weight loss, it will make everything harder. For me it really is not a diet, but its a way of life, that is making me feel so much better. So stop focusing on just the weight, thats when youll see the big changes sooner.

it is really important to pay attention to quantities of food. make sure you aren't consuming too many calories, even if you are being really diligent in only eating the right foods. i am a fairly petite woman and i exercise almost every day, and i have found that to lose weight on this diet i have to count calories as well as watch my carb and sugar intake. it is a great eating plan because without all the sugar and carbs, your blood sugar levels stay stable, and you don't get too hungry....making it easier to stick with, evn when the calories are restricted. ultimately, it boils down to calories in vs. calories burned.

psyplumb - it doesn't "just" boil down to calories in/calories out - you could be eating 1000 calories of brownie and that wouldn't be following the premise of the plan...I think putting it that way makes it sound a little too simplistic and not very supportive of people who are trying very hard to find their balance, many of whom have years of history of poor eating habits, medical problems, medication - the list goes on...

I will say that i may be a little edgy with the whole thing right now, struggling to get past a certain point and up to my chin - no, up to the middle of my corrogated temple!! with people well within the normal BMI ragging on and on about being obese/fat/whatever....please, if your BMI is 26-28 you're NOT obese. In fact, if one's BMI is within healthy range and one is going on and on about how fat and disgusting they are, they probably needs a counselor as much as they need Dr. A's book.

Besides, if someone had it all figured out on their own and knew exactly where to put the next bite - they probably wouldn't be here looking for support.

debbie,
i certainly agree that the types of food you eat are important and matter when it comes to losing weight. i was trying to offer a possibility to kimberly as to why she wasn't losing weight in phase one. even if someone is eating only the foods permitted in phase one,if they are consuming more calories than they are burning off, they will not lose weight...that was my point. isn't this forum a place to offer ideas and suggestions to each other?
in my message, i never said that i was obese, nor did i "go on and on about how fat and disgusting i am".in fact i said i was fairly petite.but i do have some weight i would like to lose, and i need to clean up my eating habits.the beauty of this diet is that it offers a very healthy, doable framework for people to improve their health and lose weight, regardless of the number of pounds they would like to lose.

I know it wasn't you who - it was a composite of a bunch of things that I admitted made me a little testy and possibly [probably/definitely] reading wrong into your post!

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and SB, I'm glad to see so much information and people involved. I am going threw the same exact situation Peewee posted about earlier, I'm only 31 and have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, I had blood work done and my triglycerides were very high where everything else was pretty normal. My doctor suggested losing 20lbs and going on the South Beach diet. I just started literally 2 days ago. I was slowly exercising more before going on the diet just because I knew I was getting fatter. To specify even more I'm 5'10, 190. So my ideal weight is around 165. I think those who discouraged about not losing that much weight in phase 1 might want to think about this. How long did it take for you to gain the weight you have? Years? How can you expect to lose all that weight in 2 weeks or even a month?

I think someone gave the best suggestion already to try it for 3months with exercise and see if you see a difference. Exercise to me is definately the key. Making your body realize it has to change it's body type to keep up with the physical activity seems like the best way to lose weight. I'm not trying to be a hypocrit I want the easy fix, the magic pill that will make me thin again. I just know the reality, that I will have to work for the body I want and it's going to take time to get it.
