Hi all,
I'm 29, recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Taking Novolog before meals and Lantus at night. Insulin made me gain 8 pounds right off the bat and it's driving me crazy!!! The diabetes is bad enough, but the weight gain is almost intolerable.

Wondering if any other T1 diabetics can give me some success stories, tips, etc for the South Beach Diet? ANY advice appreciated!

Thanks!

Good luck with your SBD :)

My gut instinct is to approach with caution as type 1 diabetes is of a different origin to type 2. Maybe I'm out of date, but I'm surprised you've only just been diagnosed with type 1. I always thought that type 1 was diagnosed much earlier, say childhood.

I'd personally be consulting with a doctor or other diabetes specialist to make sure I was okay on this eating plan.

My SIL did sbd and she is type 1 diabetes. She was diagnosed about 10-11 years ago though so she understands everything about it really well. She did phase 1 but she HAD to add in some phase 2 things cause of the diabetes. As long as you are under a doctors care, I would think you would be okay. When do you plan to start?

It is very unusual to be diagnosed with Type 1 this late, but not unheard of unfortunately! I'd much rather be Type 2, b/c it can often be controlled through diet and oral medication, but...not given a choice!

I'm on Day 4 of Phase 1. I haven't lost an ounce though, so I'm sort of nervous that it's not going to work for me! My blood sugar is great, and I've been able to reduce my insulin, but I really really want these extra 8 pounds to go away. And I'm excercising too!

Good to know that there's some evidence that a T1 diabetic can lose weight on SBD. There's just not a lot of information out there on the issue.

Thanks for the replies....

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 2 weeks ago. At that time I weighed 242. Today I started my 4th Day of Phase 1. After being cautioned by some on another chat board and taking in their suggestions of starting in Phase 2 because of Type 2 Diabetes, I consulted with my Doctor yesterday and he said as long as I closely monitor my testing levels, it was ok.

Let me add as I have on a different chat board that this decision relates to me and me only. You should consult your own Doctor.

On a more positive note, I weighed today and I am 236. My first goal is to lose 10% of my body weight which would put me at 218. My next goal is to get under 200, with a final goal of 180. I was on the South Beach in 2006 and fell off the wagon back in Dec of that year. The South Beach proved very successful for me at that time and I previously lost 21lb. I have great faith in the South Beach, and I hope to be more successful this time and have a strong conviction to stay on it for life this time.
