Women "Issues" Any ideas?

I am looking for advice or an avenue to explore so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I don't mind if men post (hey, there are male doctors out there!) as long as they aren't queasy about it!

History:
I didn't get my period till the day of my 16th birthday (happy birthday indeed!) and since then I haven't gotten it regularly whatsoever. I will go 3 months or 6 months and then get another. I have had 2 children and I BELIEVE them to be miraculous as it happened after quitting birth control (why did I start it in the first place? I certainly didn't need it)u, which is what helped me get my period in the first place (it seems). After not being able to conceive since Feb. 05 I started clomid and progesterone a year ago which FINALLY started my period 2 months after initially taking it. I have had blood samples (many vials worth in fact) to show up nothing unusual. I still haven't gotten pregnant in fact the last time TOM showed up was that 1 time a year ago.

Now here is the funny part. Every time I start up SBD (this is my 3rd time, hopefully the "charm") I get my period! I have long known that that it helps with that area, especially PCOS but my doctors have never led me to believe that I had that issue. I know it's not a weight issue because even at 16 when I was 115 lbs. I wasn't getting my TOM.

Questions:
I need to brush up on my biology and see if you can ovulate without TOM showing up
Can you not get TOM because of being nutrient deficient? You know, skinny but not healthy.

Obviously this WOE is helping me, but I was hoping to find the scientific reason as to why. I am simply curious, especially since doctors have been less than helpful. Hopefully I will stick to this way of eating not only for being healthy and losing weight but for regulating myself and wanting to have more babies!

Edited to add that I have had an issue with anemia in the past if that helps with any diagnosis

Just so you are aware... this site has no official medical professionals either giving or monitoring advice....
so you need to take any help or advice with a "grain of salt".
However there may be someone in your shoes that could offer their insight?

I do have two sites that may be helpful.

I realize that no one on here is a medical professional (well, maybe a few but the norm is no), I am simply looking for things to help guide me on my search of what is wrong. Especially since my own doctors can't seem to explain it using their knowledge, and they don't seem to want to investigate any further into the cause. I use the term "diagnosis" very broadly!

Thanks for the links and I will look them up! :D

A very broad-based possible explanation is that hormones have a chain reaction on other hormones. When you're not on SB, your insulin is probably out of whack, which in turn makes your female hormones out of whack. When you straighten out your insulin by eating right, your female hormones are able to line up to correct levels as well.

Okay, caveat emptor of not being medically trained in the slightest here are my thoughts:

Yes, I would say it is possible to be without periods if you are malnourished. To me, this makes biological sense as if you are malnourished and become pregnant there could be repercussions for you and the baby, so nature knocks out the menstrual cycle to protect you. In nature's opinion, it's goal is to reproduce healthy offspring and for that you need a healthy mother and father. Whether medical science would agree is a different matter and I daresay there will be examples to the theory I just outlined.

I think it is significant that you didn't start your periods until later, which would suggest a hormonal reason for your irregular periods. What that could be, could be a billion things. The female hormonal system is complex and very sensitive and it doesn't take much to affect our cycles for the better or worse.

Anecdotally, I can say it is possible to ovulate without getting a bleed - been there done that. In the past I have had all the symptoms of PMS and impending menstruation, but nothing. The ovarian cycle and uterine cycle are related hormonally, as one hormone increases or decreases it triggers off further responses. I cannot remember the exact chain of events accurately off hand, but I would say it is possible for your hormones to respond enough for ovulation to occur, but not to reach such a point for menstruation to occur. The reverse phenomena - menstruation without ovulation is more common I think, and many early bleeds in young women are without ovulation. Although, it is possible to get pregnant before a period.

If I were you, I'd be searching around for a doctor who is understanding of a woman's body and is prepared to organise investigations if that is what you wanted. Maybe an endocrinologist would be a start for you? I see an endocrinologist for my PCOS and he is more in tune with what I feel and want from treatment than other medics.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of unanswered questions in medical science and maybe you come into the category of beign explanationless. As I said, the female hormonal system is complex and is subject to many influences, whether physical, emotional, enviromental so an answer is not always easy!

have you ever been tested for PCOS? My periods come and go as well. every 3-6 months, when i was younger i could go forever and not have one. They found out I had PCOS. And I have a b-12 and iron deficency. But you said they did blood work and your iron would have been on there. i would see if your b-12 was check. Every time I do phase 1 it throws me into TOM. I don't knwo why either. I think it is my body getting healthy. personally. when i was trying to get pregnant with my 2nd child it was a year without a period and i was so upset i finaaly kick my butt and started loosing weight and about a month later I was pregnant. Bodys are weird sometimes. believe me I know. i hope that helped a little. good luck. :)

Just to let you know, I have had several doctors tell me that just because I'm not getting a "period" does not mean I cant get preg and that I should take all the same precautions that I was as if I was getting it. I dont know how true that is but I have heard it from more than one.

I don't have an exact answer, but I do know that insulin resistance (often caused by high carb diets) can cause ovarian issues.
