Quote: Bunny ice-cream vendor who was gravely wounded in an Oct. 7 shooting in Richmond, answered his cell phone late yesterday morning.
"I miss you," the raspy voice on the other end said.
"Who is this?" Adrian asked.
"It's Danny."
Doctors had told Dan Teodorescu and his family that it likely would be months until they knew if he would ever be able to speak again because of the damage the shooting caused to his vocal cords.
His ability to speak 12 days after the shooting, albeit roughly and briefly, is one of several new developments in the case:
** Richmond police announced yesterday that they have arrested one person in the case -- 19-year-old Dante Lamont Lewis of Richmond -- and are seeking a second suspect.
** City Councilman Douglas G. Conner Jr., who represents the 9th District, where the shooting occurred, has found the four young people who came to Teodorescu's aid before an ambulance arrived. The four, who called 911, helped apply pressure to his wounds, comforted him and gave police information about the shooting, are to be recognized with heroism citations at Monday's City Council meeting.
** Teodorescu's mother has obtained a visa and is to fly from the family's native Romania to the United States next week.
** The international law firm Reed Smith, which has an office in Richmond, has three lawyers working to get Dan Teodorescu's visa extended. The firm, which volunteered to represent Teodorescu at no charge, responded after reading that his seven-month work visa to drive an ice-cream truck in the U.S. was set to expire at the end of the month.
** And Dr. Joe Niamtu III, a Midlothian plastic surgeon who often offers his services at no charge to crime victims and others, said he would be willing to help Teodorescu should the need arise.
Conner said it was gratifying to see so many positives come out of a violent crime against someone who came to the U.S. to try to better himself.
"If you can't sell ice cream on a school yard on a Sunday afternoon next to a basketball court, what's safe?" Conner said. "It just doesn't make sense."

Unfortunately Irina's VISA to visit her fiance was once again denied because they are not married. But at least there are some positive things going on both legally and physically for Danny, and his mother will be able to visit him. |
