Morning!

I must admit I am new to the message boards, but I have been reading them for a while now and find everyone's stories inspirational!

I have done SB in the past, but fallen off the wagon - I am DETERMINED to waste no more time, so I hopped back on this morning and I am going to make it to my goals! (Your posts have helped me realize that there's no reason for me to doubt that! Thank you :D )

This morning I got up at 4:45am and headed over to the gym to get a good workout in. I've been working out at the gym for some time now, but it's time I've added SB back into my routine. While I was on the treadmill this morning I kept thinking...I wonder what you guys would say if I asked what your best tips or insights were about SB - what did you wish you knew back when you first started?

I'm sure you guys get sick of these similar questions from beginners, but please keep in mind that your answers are VERY HELPFUL to others, and maybe they even help remind you how hard you've worked and what you've gone through to get where you are.

I hope to hear from you guys!

PS - Congratulations to all of you that have made such huge strides, i think it's awesome - YOU have inspired me!

Accept the helpful advice you get here graciously and with the helpful intent it was given even if you don't perceive it to be so at the time. And just don't ever give up. Longevity and consistency beat short term perfection every time. Measure results in terms of months, not weight lost. The first will take care of the second.

Thank you for your response!

I will bear that in mind as I go along. I don't expect it to be easy, but i know it will be well worth it once I reach my goal :D

4:45am off to the gym!! Yikes! That would be early for me!

Each day is a new day -- keep your focus on your goal! Healthy - wealthy and wise!! Don't let the stresses of life get you down! Slow and steady! You will get there -- best to you!!

Ugh 4:45. I'm a morning person, and that's too damn early!

Our gym opens at 5:00, and I did the early morning workout, um, twice. Yeah, twice.

Worst. Days. Ever!

I like going in to work early and knocking off at about 3:00 to get to the gym before I head home.

My tips:
1) Celebrate every small success. Take time to pat yourself on the back for getting up at OHMYGAWDITSEARLY and going to the gym. Look in the mirror after eating that salad when the McDonalds was right there and say "You did a great job!"
2) Make it work for you. Don't try to follow someone else's diet. When someone posts "I ate XXXX for breakfast every day," that doesn't mean you will fail if that XXXX is your least favorite food ever. There are limitless ways to follow the plan and still succeed. Advice and experience are great, but in the end, you're the only one who can do this for yourself. Own your success and figure out what's right for you.

I think you are doing the smartest and best thing: Seeking advice from people who have succeeded and are willing to help others do the same!

Best tips IMO:

Follow the plan pretty strictly, with minimal treating/cheating, especially at first (first 6 months or so, anyway).

Exercise most days of the week.

Drink plenty of water.

Plan, plan, plan, and then plan some more so you will always have the food you need and not be caught short and fall prey to off plan eating.

Take the time to look back and see how far you've come instead of always worrying about how far you have to go (to goal, to being healthy, etc.).

Look at this as a lifestyle change, not a diet. Meaning you will always eat this way, for the rest of your life. It's not something you just quit or go off of.

Best!!!

Don't consider SB to be a diet. This is a lifestyle change, for a healthier way of living. That also helps you to not be so discouraged when you slip up (inevitable) and eat something you shouldn't. If it's a lifestyle, it's easier to say "so what?" to the occastional cheat, and start back up right away. Don't beat yourself up when the inevitable happens.

Keep in mind the reason why you're doing it...and make lots of goals!

This, to me, is the best advice. Keep yourself nourished and the temptations are MUCH easier to handle if you're taken care of physically (the emotional temptations are another story   ).

Family members and friends try to convince you that "You can eat this it won't hurt you!" When you change your eating habits, it is sometimes harder on your loved ones than it is on you! I'm from the south and everyone here celebrates EVERYTHING with food. Don't get caught in the trap. Remember you are doing this for your health and you deserve to be healthy!!! :) Also remember you are not alone, the people here are great and very supportive all you got to do is ask!

Plan your meals. From day 1 I created my own meal template for the week and for the last 9 months on almost every Friday night I plan my menu for the week down to the snack options.

This allowed me to pre-determine what was SBD appropriate or not ahead of time and just look at my fridge to figure out what I was supposed to eat for that meal.

When I get to one year on SBD I will probably ditch the menu since I am more familiar with the diet and truth be told, almost nothing in my home is non-SBD so I can make up meals as I go along.

1-Never underestimate yourself and the power over the choices you make.
2-Accept that everything you put in your mouth is a choice.
3. I don't care if you've eaten 1,000 Snickers bars in a week. Get back on the train and keep chuggin' along. Today doesn't care what yesterday did.
4. Plan!
5. Don't let yourself get too hungry or too tired. That's a surefire way to derail.
6. Never stop loving yourself!
