YEP!! It was 1 year ago today that I started South Beach.
At that time, I was wearing 2x pants and weighed about 289 (didn't have a scale when I started). I'm hypothyroid, and one of the problems associated with throid problems is weight gain, thanks to a slow metabolism. The weight gain had been happening for a couple years, but I was in denial. I had heard through other message boards that South Beach is a good diet for people with hypothyroid as well as other endocrine system problems, so I did a little bit of research and came across this forum. It was shortly after that (like the next day) that I went shopping and the only pants I could afford to get that fit me were those horrible 2x's. That's when I finally said I had had enough and started on SB the next day.
Thank you for this forum and everyone on here. I didn't have the book when I first started (DH got it for me for christmas), so I got all my info from here. I'm also thankful for all the people here who ahve supported me nad cheered me on!! It is a privelege to get to know all of you!

Now, by no means has this last year been easy, but knowing that I was in control of my diet (for the most part) has really been a great strength to me! My husband is disabled (Cerebral Palsy), and I stay home to help him. We are low- income. We applied for Food Stamps (FS) the last day of October last year, and after a fiasco, finally started recieving theem the middle of December last year. For this whole year, we got 162$ a month of FS. As of this month, we are now getting 174$. That's still not a whole lot for 2 people. I can't always get the more expensive SB friendly stuff, so I do the best I can, like limiting the amount of regular cheese I eat. I have finally come to realize that I should make use of our local FOod Banks as well, and while most of what they give isn't SB friendly, I can pass that stuff along to friends who need it and keep what I can use and therefore help stretch my FS budget a little bit more.
Shortly after I started SB, I developed foot problems (Plantar Fasciitis) that made it so I can't do much for excercise. I didn't find out until April that I could use the bike and weights in our appartment complex office for free during the day (they charge a 300$ key deposit to use it after hours, and there's no way I can afford that!), so ever since then I have been riding the bike and lifting weights for excercise as much as I possibly can!
I mentioned that my DH is disabled. On top of that, he had neck surgery for a herniated disc the end of August. He was in the hospital for two daysThose two days, and a few days afterwards, I relied on food I had made and frozen before hand (so, it was healthy stuff) as well as stuff that my family and friends brought for us (which wasn't the most healthy stuff!!). I did the best I could under the circumstances!

The holidays and a couple trips in the spring were also challenges! But now that I've had more experience, I am much stronger at this in those situations and hope to be able to make it through similar sitations better next time!

Well, in the last year, I have lost 55 lbs. I'm just over half way to my goal. I have lost a total of 22.5 inches off of my body (I measure neck, chest, upper arm, lower arm, hips, thigh, and calves).

I refused to wear jeans that had the #2 as the first @ in the size. I'm now wearing size 18 jeans!!

Before SB, ice cream was my nightly dessert of choice. Now it's often yogurt (often with a1/2 banana and some of the Sweet & Crunchy Granola, the recipie for which is on this forum!).

Yes, this is not always easy. Take it one day, or even just one meal at a time. Come here for support/ guidance. And when situations come up that you don't really have any control about, do the best you can until you can get back on track!!

Take care!!!

Becky

Becky, I'm so proud of you! It seems like yesterday that we were starting the Valentine's Vixens and had so far to go. A lot of people came and went in our group, but we're still here and going strong. Congratulations on all of your success, from one Vixen to another! ;)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You should feel very proud of what you accomplished. Everyone who reads this board and complains about life and the diet and says they can't do SBD for some reason or another should be directed to read your post.

Once again, fantastic job!

That's very exciting to hear. I went and bought all the SBD groceries I need for my two weeks of Phase 1 today, and reading your story has really inspired me. Thank you!

Becky- Wow! That is very impressive- good for you. You've really overcome a lot. I think many people in your situation would have thrown up their hands & given up. Happy Beachiversary indeed! You are an inspiration to us newbies- thank you.

Congrats on your success and your committment to improve your lifestyle. 55 pounds is fantastic but all that you have learned this year about how to make SBD work for your life is priceless. Year 2 will be even better!!!
