With all the problems of childhood obesity, "adult" onset diabetis fast becoming a childhood disease... why are our schools using candy, cookies... just about any kind of toxic junk food you can think of... for fund raising?

I'd hardly think boxes of broccoli would be a popular fundraiser, but what kind of message are we giving to kids when we instruct them to eat a healthy diet then send them out selling junk food?

One of my pet peeves as well. But it's a matter of selling what people want unfortunately. The HS girl's V-Ball team makes like $20K a year selling tubs of frozen cookie dough. They've tried them all and that is what makes them the most money. Their program is actually now a model for other HS teams in the metro area because it's so successful. Makes me feel like a drug pusher though. 90% of the people buying multiple tubs were already very overweight IMO. Given the other alternatives of doing away with non-revenue or low revenue HS sports or raising taxes, there aren't a lot of other good alternatives. How much gift wrap, greeting cards and magazines can people absorb too?

We used to sell fruit. Crates of fresh Florida produce. It was insanely tasty. People would line up orders months in advance.

That's what we sold too lorka--Sell Citrus!

The Scouts also have a yearly apple selling campaign. I don't know how profitable it is compaired to the Girl Guide cookies, though!

Oh, how I feel your pain. Up until last this year the PTSO would give the kids a candy bar for selling a certain number of items. Then they would draw a name for a free scooter. Last year they went from the scooter to a HUGE candy bar as a prize. That's when I said "No Way" We didn't participate in the next one. I was sooo mad. It's bad enough that these kids are pressured into selling junk to people who feel obligated but then put a giant candy bar as a GIFT. I don't even think so.

My DD started preschool this year, about a week in I get a newletter about the first fundraiser. I was VERY pleased to see that they were selling stik-ees (window clings for all occasions). That is the one time I didn't mind indulging :D

I am from Canada as well, and our sports teams sold Grapefruits and Oranges too.... Lorka did you grow up in Quebec, by chance? Or did other Provincial schools sell fruit?

We only sold chocolate once a year, then we did other fundraisers like book sales, rummage sales, things like that. Band concerts. Theatre shows. That's how we raised money. Rock a thons (Rocking chairs - how long can you keep rocking) and Jump Rope for Heart...

Nope, in Ontario. But we did Jump Rope, too. Among others. The only things we sold, other that fruit, were cookie dough and magazine subscriptions. Everything else was charity and sponsoring.

Throwing my 2 cents in....

I had the same concerns than all of you and I decided to fight for a change and joined the school's parent association! I am vice-president and I am also the delegate for the school commission.

I was soooooo sick of seeing chocolate ( never thought I'd say that ! ). We voted for a change ! This year we have a blanket price that all parents pay for the full year for activities and we have 1 fundraiser. Only 1 fundraiser....We sell baked goods and coffee. The baked goods are trans free, fat free and all the ingredients are natural and deeeeeelicious ! The coffee is fair trade and veeeery good.

I just bought wrapping paper and candles from some of the girls at work for their kids. I stay away from the bad stuff, like the pizza kits.
