No more shakes...

You know, I remember before I was following the SB WOE, I would get the shakes once in a while in the early afternoon. I felt so weird, shaky and had hot flashes (and I'm 27 years old!!). I'd usually satisfy those feelings with some pretzels, popcorn, chocolate or other non-SB friendly food. I'm wondering now if all the sugar and bad things in my diet previously were leading me to go through some sort of withdrawal when I didn't get enough of it!!! Anyway, I've been following SB for about a month now and I have not had the shakes once--just another little change I have noticed. Have I said lately how much I love the SB WOE? Because I REALLY LOVE THE SB WOE!!!

Could have been hypoglycemia. It's a condition where the body produce too much insulin when you eat high carbs, so you end up with a lower than normal level of sugar in your blood. If your curious, you can make a search and see if you recognize other symptoms.

Btw, pretzel, chocolate and that kind of stuff would make the symptoms disappear (you give your body a lot of sugar in one shot), but on the long run, it just makes things worse. People who have hypoglycemia and won't take care of it are at high risk to developp diabetes later on. If that happen again, I would suggest try taking a fruit or a small glass of fruit juice.

If that it, well, without knowing it, you just found the perfect treatment :
1- Avoid fastfood (very high sugar, low fiber food)
2- Eat frequently (if you eat snacks between your 3 meals)
3- Lose weight (as for diabetes, extra weight can cause the problem).

An healthy lifestyle is the only way to control it, so yep, it's just another reason to love SB !

I thought you were about to swear off protein shakes, smoothies, and meal replacement drinks!! ;) Glad you found another benefit of eating to support your health! It makes it a lot easier to stay with it even when the scale isn't cooperating.

WOW! I bet it was hypoglycemia then! HOLY CRAP--good thing I started SB when I did--I sure as heck do not want to end up with diabetes. And yes, Red, it sure does make it easier to stick to this WOE when you realize the health benefits. My weight loss has been slow, but I have lost so I am not giving up. It is so obvious that this is such a great WOE that I know it is only a matter of time before the scale proves it to me too! :D

There's hypoglycemia (a tendency toward low blood sugar) and then there's reactive hypoglycemia (high glycemic carbs make your body overcompensate for high blood sugar, and your blood sugar ends up too low). They are two different things.

Don't have any juice when that happens-- it just continues the cycle. Instead, have a balanced SB-friendly meal or snack. Continuing to eat regularly and balanced should prevent it anyway.

You're right about the juice. It's still better than chocolate, but worse than a SB-friendly meal or snack.

HealthyHopes.

1- It may have been hypoglycemia, but there's no way to be sure without medical testing. A lot of people won't do the test, especially when the symptoms disappear when having an healthy lifestyle.

2- It's not something you really get cured from. If it's hypoglycemia, your body will remain more sensitive to sugar amount. However, as long as you eat regularly, and in an healthy way, you should not have any problems like that.

I have hypoglycemia and it sounds very similar. I would be careful though and get tested by a DR before assuming this is the case.

Hypoglycemia is very sneaky....the other day my sugar dropped to 2.1 and I nearly passed out...with 2 kids in tow!!! I had the shakes and nearly vomited....When I was strictly adhering to the SBD plan , I suffered no episodes....Worth having the blood tests done!!

So even though my symtoms have disappeared you guys think I should talk to my doc about this and get tested? What do they (docs) do for you if you do test positive for hypoglycemia? Give you meds? Monitor you? Tell you to follow a healthier diet (like I'm doing!! :D)?

My DR advised me to be careful about eating every few hours and to watch the sugar levels. I was not given medication.

Be careful about eating every few hours like make sure you do it or don't do it?

Also--I'm going back to the doctor mid December to have my cholesterol checked again to see if this WOE brought it down at all b/c in April it was on the high end. So when they take blood for that test, I'll ask them to also check for hypoglycemia.

Again, thanks for bringing this up you guys!
