Good Morning Everyone!

First off, thanks to everyone for sharing your day to day experiences with SBD. I've never been involved in a forum of any kind and it's pretty cool how you can learn so much about the topic and more so, the person. I tend to not share personal information, such as, my weight issue. I believe starting this journal will let me get everything out and realize I'm not weak or a glutton for being around 40-50lbs overweight. I think if I can see my words, as well as, all of yours I will be a lot more accepting of who I am and what I'm trying to do wth the SBD.

That being said, I am on my last day of P1 and I'm down at least 9lbs and of course, feeling very good and motivated. I truly feel for the first time in my life, I've changed a habit and will continue to attempt to maintain a healthy balance. As with most of you, I am concerned about moving on the P2-knowing full well this is what needs to be done so that I begin to learn what my body needs or doesn't need. One of the biggest contributing factors to my weight gain is my active social life that includes fun people and times (I am fortunate). And of course, one my close friends is having a birthday party Saturday right in time to start off P2. AND I VOLUNTEERED TO BRING DESSERT????? Well, anyway, my DH (of 3 weeks) is also SBDin' it with me and we are armored with some red wine and ready to hit the party. Our plan is to PAY ATTENTION to what we are drinking and eating Saturday. BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE! Wish us luck..

I'll post two days of food just for informational purposes:

Yesterday:

B: 2 slices of Canadian bacon/hard boiled egg/V8
MS: celery w/RF peanut butter
L: salad w/chicken and Annie's Godess Dressing (THE BEST! check it out)
AS: Canadian bacon slice and raw broccoli dipped in dressing
(desperate tie me over to dinner snack: 10 pistachios
D: first attempt at Meatza Pizza w/ no recipe
D: Ricotta with orange and vanilla extract

TODAY: (at time of posting have only eaten breakfast, but of course, have all snacks and meals planned -not planning was definitely a factor in making poor choices in food)

B: omlette w/ g peppers, canadian bacon, onion and garlic
MS: LF cheese stick
L: left over Meatza Pizza look alike
AS: LF cheese (what can I say, it's Friday and didn't have energy to fill up celery with something this morning)
D: London Broil w/brussel sprouts
D: popsicle or ricotta cheese desset

exercise: (this is what I really need to write down and take more responsibity for as I'll be reallg good for weeks and then go to the gym once a week for a month)

take two insane dogs for walk in the woods which includes very, very steep hills. not sure of the distance, but a least a 45 minute walk.

OK! there it is-whew. I'll report back on Monday. Thanks for your time and look forward to communicating with you all in the future.

Hey, that's great that your BF is doing this with you! I wish my husband would!

I wouldn't worry at all about bringing a dessert. There are so many great desserts you can make for P2! How about a cheesecake? Do a search on this site for "cheesecake" or "peanut butter" or "chocolate" and you'll come up with loads of ideas! If I were you, I'd also bring along another SBD item to the party (and make it look like you're just a generous guest). Maybe a can of whole cashews? Those always go over big at parties. How about Triscuits and sliced low-fat cheese with grapes as a garnish? There are so many ideas out there. This diet is great for when you're eating socially, I think!

Thanks for the advice thepug...do you happen to have a Pug? I think that rather than making a dessert and running the risk of eating it before I get to the party, I will pick up a cake at one of our local bakeries. I will make sure it's sealed and unable to be opened without evidence.

Yeah, that's why I haven't made a fancy SBD dessert yet -- could be dangerous!

Nope, I don't have a pug. That's just the silly nickname my husband gave me because of my nose!

Thanks for the input Jess and I think you are right. If I miss breakfast because I didn't prepare it the night before it throws my whole day off. I find when I have everything planned and made the day before I do better.

Congrats on the 9lbs. P2 is a little tough at first. Introduce things slowly and keep track of those good carbs. I was so excited that I could start getting good carbs that I went a little overboard and saw weight gain and quick.

Good luck!

Hi Jessica,

Thought I would come to your journal and welcome you to the forum! Isn't the DC area great? There really is something to do every day here. Great people, lots of fun. :D I moved here 14 years ago and have loved it almost since day 1.

It looks like you're off to a good start on the diet. I know what you mean about confessing personal info like weight and such. I've NEVER told anyone my weight before, especially not my husband. (Almost as closed mouthed about that as I am about who I vote for. Lol!) I really am feeling more relaxed and happy with myself now that it's become nothing to get stressed over.

Congratulations on the recent marriage!

Hi All:

OK! Friday didn't exactly turn out as I planned. It was the last day of P1 for my husband and I, so we were definitely looking forward to some more food choices, but ONE MORE DAY. My husband weighed after he got home from work and he's down approx 15 pds. I'm so happy for him as he has a textbook "beer belly" and it was remarkably smaller. Rather than making London Broil for dinner we went out. We both had 2 XX-large steamed crabs (they really are fantastic in MD) and salads. Followed dinner up with a visit to some friends house and joked about waiting until midnight and then we'd have some wine. We were strong and held off until Saturday afternoon. Our first day on P2 (right in time for a birthday/Preakness party) The day started out very good. Made Eggs Florentine from the SBD book (added some sliced almonds) and it was so delicious. Oh! and drank a glass of light choc. soy milk since I can do that now! Ate the eggs with 2 slices of turkey bacon and I was ready to start the day. Took my dogs on a 45 minute walk in the woods (which I said I would do Friday afternoon and chose to bribe them w/doggie treats since a severe thunderstorm was brewing) complete with muddy stream and had plenty of energy to climb hills. Since we were attending a party later on in the afternoon where they were going to serve fabulous food, we snacked on cut up pieces of pork tenderloin and celery around 2pm while watching step-son's flag football game. Went to party from there, placed our bets (ended up with Imperialism) and husband and I mixed our first drink in two weeks-chose vodka and diet tonic rather than red wine because it was hot, hot, hot -red wine would have to wait until later than evening. So here's the list-not so good, not so bad...

veggies w/hummus
a few pita chips w/hummus
2 deviled eggs
1 cheeseburger-no bun
spinach salad
1 sausage link....the hill I'm sliding down is getting steeper
3 bites of white and dark chocolate mousse cake (come on! who wouldn't?)
HERE"S THE WORST: a handful of microwave popcorn (I'm so weak)
I would estimate around 5 vodka and tonics throughout the afternoon
and 1 bottle of red wine....i know, i know.

Had multiple conversations regarding SBD since some people I had not seen in awhile noticed the newly married couple's weightloss which was a very motivating and rewarding feeling.

Sunday:

B: oatmeal and turkey bacon (the pancakes are quite good)
S: leftover meatza pizza
L: a slice of cheese pizza (ARRRGH) We had ahouse full of kids and nothing to feed them with since I hadn't been to the store so I had to order one (Just ordered a medium so there would be none left over-my trick didn't work because I just pushed the kids out of the way and ate one before it was gone-
AS: LF cheesestick
D: London Broil w/brussel sprouts
D: LF/SF choc pudding BECAUSE ITS P2!!!
I added a SF popsicle for good measure

Not a really good day, but I was stuck at home tending to children while my better half slept off the birthday/preakness party and couldn't occupy myslef with exercise or grocery shopping...laundry just didn't get it.

So, I weighed my self first thing this morning and I'm up about 2lbs. hopefully, that is not an acturate reading as I hadn't "do what you do" in the morning. I'll check again tomorrow since I can't get away from the scale-I'm not discouraged though, this is a life style change not a temporary fix.

TODAY will be much better:

B: oatmeal pancake
MS: hard boiled egg
L: I'll go to the grocery store and hit a salad bar
AS: LF cheesestick
D: do not know
D: do not know

I will go to the grocery store after my aerobics class this evening. I'm excited about picking up some fruit and some WW pasta. This morning, I started off with a grain so I could determine my hunger level and I am hungrier than I was on P1 at this time of the day, but I didn't actually become hungry until the normal snack time. allbeit, I am much more hungry-here I come egg!

Wish me luck with P2...I will add fruit to my lunch tomorrow, staying away from grains for a few days as I'm afraid I've messed up my metabolism after Saturday's indiscretions.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi Jessica, It doesn't look as though your indescretions were totally out there :D. Certainly not enough to account for 2 lbs overnight! It looks like you're doing great and, wow, congrats on your husband's weight loss! (I think the SBD claim of "13" lbs should add something about if you're a guy that is. :P)

Good luck on P2 and enjoy!

I have discovered that I am discouraged because of my obession with the scale. I weighed again this morning because of the weekend gain of 2 lbs and they are still there! I asked them to leave! So, no more daily weigh-ins.

Didn't go to aerobics (darn traffic wouldn't allow it), but did get on the Precor, elliptical bike for 30 minutes.
Yesterday for dinner we had Talapia with a homemade salsa consisting of onions, green pepper, tomatoes, garlic and juice of a lime. So fresh! Served that with sauteed zucchini. Desset was a NSA fudgesicle.

Today's menu:

B: 2 hard boiled eggs, 2 slices of turkey bacon and V8
MS: carb control yogurt
L: ham and lettuce roll up w/LF mayo
AS: LF cheesestick
D: chicken something or other
D: something for sure!

After going to the gym I went to the grocery store-It takes me soooo long to shop now. I imagine it will get better as I become accustomed to all these new fangled foods. I spent most of my time in the produce section wondering whether or not blueberries could be added into P2. Hey, I took a risk and opened my good fats/good cards book when I got home and all is good. Picked up a lot of things I have never tried before and I'm looking forward to trying them: WW pasta, Tahini (going to attempt baba ganoush (at least that's how it's pronounced) made with egg plant, chickpeas, etc., picked up shredded wheat and bran cereal.

I am not sure what plan of action I should take in regards to P2...should I add fruits and grains slowly or alternate P1 and P2? These 2 lbs have really confused me. At least my clothes are still fitting better. Also, I'm not sure if it's an optical illusion or not, but I believe my waist is actually smaller...should have measured, but I only have a metal tape measure and it would have really been cold and I could have possibly cut myself...

I keep telling myself this is my new way of eating and it's healthy and it's good and weightloss will happen. Regardless of when, I will be healthier.

Tonight is dog walking day, so off to the woods we will go when I get home from work. I am really going to be good about exercise as I believe it will help with losing in P2 and it does feel good. I think I have a body type that can really pack on fat. I'm thick, almost 5'5", broad shouldered, large breasted, narrow hips, muscular legs and my most faithful companion, a big belly. DH always says I could probably be a successful body builder if I wasn't chubby (in his most tactful way, of course) I need to exercise. If not, I don't think my metobolism will pick up as much as I'd like. Of course, this could all be some form of justification for becoming overweight to begin with. Well, I hope it's not as I'm really trying to be honest with myself.

Off to check on everyone else. Have a great day!

a quick follow up: I skipped grains for breakfast today and not nearly as hungry as I was yesterday at this time. Grains will have to wait for lunch whenever I have the courage to do so....proteins for breakfast and a V8 work best for me. I've always wondered why I am hungry shortly after eating a "pre SBD well rounded" breakfast. Now I know, it's the starches. We don't get along in the mornings. Kind of similar to me and my husband.

Good Morning....Middle of the week-yay!

Last night made "Mexican Chicken" and it was fabulous! Made enough to have left overs for lunch today....is it noon yet? Made the peanut butter cup dessert and could only eat 1/2 of it...I used a little too much peanut butter, but boy! was it yummy.

Purchased the South Beach Cookbook last night and I'm very excited about getting in the kitchen. There are some really good recipes in there. I waited until I was on Phase 2 to pick it up since there's more flexibilty and I'll need help incorporating everything into my diet. Of course, the dessert section has more P3 dishes than anything.

Today's menu:

B: egg casserole made with eggs, turkey bacon, LF cheese, onions, gpepper and anaheim pepper, and a V8.

MS: cucumber w/hummus
L: Mexican Chicken
AS: celery w/FF cream cheese
D: something out of my new cookbook
D: ditto

I haven't been preparing my lunches the night before this week. I need to make sure I do that because I don't have time in the morning. I have so many different things in my frig and I don't want to waste them and go out to a salad bar for lunch when it's all at home.

EXERCISE: pilates class

I got on the scale this morning even though I said I wouldn't. Now I really mean it-I'm not weighing anymore-ever. well, OK maybe I'll wait until this weekend. My weight is fluctuating in the wrong direction, but my clothes are still a lot looser than pre SBD so it's a conumdrum.

Well, if anyone has any words of encouragment of advice I'd really appreciate as i'm not nearly as optimitstic as I was during P1..

do what i dont do...forget about the scale. i, like you, am obsessed. when the #s go down i get so jazzed. on the other hand, when they go the other way, i get discouraged. one thing that helps mentally is this: as long as i am on plan and i know i am eating like i am supposed to w/o cheats, i don't claim the loss. i blame it on fluids, aunt flo, havent been to the bathroom yet, i put too much weight on my right foot, whatever it takes. what i did after being here a few weeks was made tuesdays my official weigh in day, although i weigh almost every day as well. i document each week and that is what i claim here and in my head. if its different than that through the week, i let it be. does that make sense?

yes, get a tape measure!!! its weird, but when i am not seeing losses on the scales in a week or so, i will usually see it in inches. no lie, i measured on 5/11, and my upper thigh was 23" this morning it was just over 21". in addition i have lost 3 inches in my hips and another 3.5 in my waist.

just hang in there. i would put money on the fact that your scales will be moving soon. in the meantime, enjoy the extra breathing room in your pants!!!

Well, let me try my hand at being encouraging here...

Your menu looks GREAT! Seriously, you are making very good choices. However, if you are in P2 now, you should be introducing some good carbs. Maybe start w/ one fruit serving, and make sure you have it w/ a "carb stopper," like a scoop of cottage cheese or a Tbsp. of pb. (but, of course, you couldn't have that AND your pb cup dessert! ;) ). Don't be afraid to introduce the good carbs little by little! I swear, I'm doing better now than I was in P1! It's slow going, but the scale is starting to move in the right direction. Please don't worry about what you weigh -- everyone, everyone, EVERYONE complains about their weight fluctuating up and down constantly! That's why it's really important not to weigh yourself too often. I do it once a week, and sometimes I go a little bit longer. If it shows I stayed the same (or, heaven forbid, GAINED), I get on again within the next day or two and all is well! Really! Trust me! (Am I being encouraging enough??)

You are doing a great job, and if your clothes are looser that is ALL that matters! SCALES BE DAMNED!!!!!!

:)

Dolly-VA

Hey Jessica! Don't get discouraged! You probably were about to start a mini-stall when you gained those two pounds. Week two is just not as impressive a week as week one in weight loss (I think because you lost all the water weight in week one and now you're body is adapting to the new eating style and goes into a little stall.) That's why going into P2 seems so necessary. Shakes up your system. (On the other hand, people who continue to lose impressively on week 2 seem to sometimes benefit by staying one more week on P1. Go figure.) This kind of thing seems very common.

Get out of the habit of the daily weigh-in. Monthly fluctuations added to daily fluctuactions (a little extra salt yesterday? WATER WEIGHT TODAY! Among other natural reasons .) Now, to follow my own advice...

Too bad I don't live closer to you, I'd love to take my furry monster out with you and yours through the parks. I do the zillion of paths around my area, which are nice, but my dog pays no attention to bicyclists (thus they are in constant danger of being "tripped".)

Can you post the recipe for Mexican Chicken? Have a great day, stay dry, and check to be certain you don't have any red-eyed hitchhikers on you before going back in the house! :P

JessicaRabbit

Had fun w/ the new cookbook last night! My 2 dogs really loved it since half of whatever I was making ended up on the floor. Sure had to wash a lot of dishes though!

Since I was cooking and experimenting last night, I ate while I cooked so I didn't have a structured meal.

AS: handful of soy nuts and cucumber slices, freshly roasted chick peas
D: ham, lettuce, avacado, tomato, g pepper wrap w/carb control ranch dressing.
D: strawberry/blueberry smoothie: added vanilla extract to plain FF yogurt, poured into blender, added fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries, 1 packet of sugar substitue and ice cubes. Blended until smooth. poured into glass and topped w/ light reddi wip

Took pups for a walk in the woods. We are due to be invaded by Cicadas and since I am from NC and these bugs only come out every 17 years (there are some types of cicadas that come out every year, but not in mass quantity like the "17and 13 year cicadas"), I haven't experienced this event before. Anyway, I was climbing a hill with my head down because it's easier for me to keep going up a hill if I don't know how steep or long the hill is and I saw a lot of holes in the ground (like it was recently aerated). This is the first clue that the Cicadas have left their burrows under ground and taken to the nearby trees for mating purposes. After they mate their babies fall to the ground and dig in for 17 years then crawl out of the holes and start all over again. After I see the holes, I look for the closest tree and see a few of these 2" bugs on the side of the tree and then I see some more and some more. I made the mistake of looking up and the leaves of the old oak tree are covered with them. kinda creeped me out. They don't do much though. Just hanging out. Not moving, flying or anything. It's interesting because Cicadas are in a lot of areas, but the 17 year Cicadas and the 13 year Cicadas are only in a relatively small area of the mid altantic (think Baltimore/washington DC/Virginia) and only in areas with trees and grass so not in the cities too much.

Anyway, if you are still reading here is my meal plan for the day:

B: hard boiled egg, carb control yogurt and V8
MS: roasted chickpeas
L: salad w/ham and feta and veggies
AS: just realized the hard boiled egg was my afternoon snack
so I'll need to go out and get something since I'm going straight to the gym from work
D: pork loin and side of veggie

Exercise: step aerobic class for 60 minutes

Thanks onthelose, I will adapt your weigh in trick-because the scale is there and I will step on it, but you're right, I told myself it was just informational and didn't really count and I was OK with the fact that I'm still holding steady while husband is down like 18 pounds!!! since 5/1.

Thepug, thank you for your encouragement-I had forgotten about the "carb blocker" technique. I will start doing that.

Dolly: Don't look up into the trees! Thanks for the insight on patterns of weightloss. Hope you enjoy the Mexican chicken and your own taco season would be easy and probably better!!

Thanks again-it's amazing how much y'alls words really picked me up! Have a great day!
