hey everyone. i'm new to this community (and to the diet itself). i've heard lots of good things about it, and reading the posts and successes on this community board really inspires me.

so here's a question: is keeping a scale / weighing yourself regularly really that important? let me hear your opinions

how long did it take to reach your "target" weight? how much did you lose per week?

i'm filled with endless questions that i'm sure i'll post at some other time. thanks to all who read, and give me some words of inspiration please!

ah, yes. and one more question that's really important.

i have never ever been a fan of vegetables (i have an issue with textures) so i find it difficult to eat more than a salad throughout the day. at the same time, i'm also a compulsive eater. i find myself snacking on deli meats and nuts, and skipping vegetables.

i know this isn't "healthy" per se, but is this acceptable on the SBD?

lots of discussions on scales here. personally i like having the data points to see trends over time. most seem to take the number very personally and emotionally. it's not the scale that is the problem, it's people's reactions to it. if you are going to let an inanimate object rule your emotions then it's not a good thing. if you want to collect data it works fine for that. it's an imperfect measure of progress anyway.

how long is a string? you need to know both end points before you can determine it's length. start now and you'll know how long it takes to reach your goals when you get there. it's different for everyone. in general you tend to lose more quickly at first and more slowly at the end. Even an "average" is a fairly misleading number. The last 5-10 can be positively glacial in their movement downwards. But P3 and weight maintenance/managment is just another euphamism for a plateau/stall that lasts the rest of your life. At some point, positive feedback from the scale will disappear anyway. might as well get used to it along the way.

vegetables are fairly critical for SBD. 4.5 cups per day minimum. 1/2 cup for breakfast and 2 cups for lunch and 2 cups for dinner. try roasting them perhaps. lots of posts on this topic as well. your tastes often change over time, so the more you eat them, the more you tend to like them or at least tolerate them. that's the theory anyway!

good luck!

You say you don't like vegies becase of the texture but you eat salad. Is it mushy cooked vegies you don't like the texture of? If that's the case I suspect your experience of vegitables has been mostly overcooked vegies. Look in the recipie section for some new cooking methods and make sure you stop cooking before they get to the mush stage. Many people like roasing which gives a diffrent flavor. You can also steam lightly or saute with a little olive oil and seasoning of your choice.
Also a few more suggestions.
Try snacking on raw vegies and dip.
Try something diffrent you've never had before.
If possible get the freshest most local vegies you can. Depending on where you live you might not have much gowing season left. But fresh from the farm always tasts 100% better than something that been trucked across the country. I live in New England and I stopped at a farm stand on my way home from work last night and was still able to get fresh local rasberries, apples, green beans, tomatoes, eggplant and squash.

thank you both for replying so quickly!

i think i'm going to purchase a scale so i can record my progress. i think that i need to not use it too often, is all. then i can see if i'm losing weight, but not obsess over my weight fluctuation from day to day.

as for the vegetables... i'm going to see what I can do. for now, i'm just going to eat lots of salad. next time i go food shopping, i'll see what kind of vegetables there are. is squash allowed? i've always loved squash soup.

thanks for your ideas, and i'll be sure to try some different cooking methods!
