Hi everyone!
I went up north over the weekend, and to make up for some planned indulgences, I wanted to make sure I got some exercise. All the hotel had was a Gazelle Freestyle and a crappy treadmill, so I tried the Gazelle, which I had never used before.
I loved it! I had so much fun on it that I used it for an hour Friday and over a half hour Saturday.
Well...by Saturday evening, I could barely walk. No exaggeration — I'm hobbling. My calves are in excruciating pain. I was supposed to jog yesterday and I didn't because, well, I'm thinking if I can't walk, jogging's going to be tricky.
They still hurt today. Usually today I would either jog or do the elliptical. What should I do? Power through the pain? Take another day off? Apply ice? Apply heat? Do you think I hurt myself, or am just really, really sore from using different muscles? I don't really want to take another day off because I don't want to lose progress. On the other hand, I'm in pretty bad pain.
(For a point of reference, for any responders who don't know me, I work out six days a week: jogging, elliptical, exercise bike, aerobics with weight intervals.)
Advice would be appreciated! :) Thanks! |

Wow, I saw your photo progress and you look fantastic
and very fit.
I always let sore muscles warm up and see how they
feel then, if it really hurts after a gentle warm up
you may want to do something that does not engage
the calves.
I always rely on my trusty ultra gym which has a
rowing option.
I just sold a gazelle in a garage sale. My husband
bought it and never used it and it terrified my littliest
chihuahua when I used it. Those things are huge
but do hit different muscles. |

Our daughters Pre Physical Therapy and shes told me that extremely sore muscles need a day of rest and she said takes some Aleive with food and it helps with the pain of the sore muscles.
I think changing up routines or using something different like the gazelle probably used your muscles in a different way and thats why you got so sore.
I also work out 6 days a week exercise is addicting once you get into a routine with it.

Your photo progress is very very VERY impressive cortcase!
My mother actually has a Gazelle, and enjoyed it for a few years, but kind of lost interest in it the last year or so. I never could get into it. I am not sure if you were looking for one, but if you are, I'm sure my mother would let it go for very cheap. I hate to promote a sale on here lol, so I apologize if that's what it seems like, but the machine is literally sitting in my shed unused. It would be great if it could get some more use out of it!
Speaking of how much you exercise... I really need to increase my exercise. I had been running a lot but my treadmill broke, and I like running but I have a hard time getting myself to run outside. So I either need to just force myself to run outside or get my treadmill fixed! |

Thanks, Kickit! And thanks for the offer too — I actually bought one from someone on Craigslist a few days ago for $40. I was pretty excited since it was the $180 version! I figured out from using it at home that I didn't stretch well enough after using it the first two times. I think I've got it down now!
I always have to gear myself up to use the treadmill. I hate it with a passion but I do it three of my six workouts a week because I feel like it gets me in the best shape. Ugh, though. :) |

Great to hear you found one and for such a good price! That is awesome :)
I am the same way with the treadmill. I need to gear myself up for it and really get myself in the mood. I don't think I hate it as much as you do lol (with a passion), but it does take some time for me to actually get on the damn thing! Once I get into it, and especially when I am finished, I always feel good and am glad I went on it. Now I just need to fix mine :x |

I posted a message about the Gazelle before I saw your message. My husband and I have used one for over 20 years, because we used the predecesor the "Airofit" until one of the gliders cracked in half and they were no longer making them. There are tapes that accompany the Gazelle and they include a warm up and cool down, which would better prepare you for the workout. Also, you are suppose to slightly bend your knees. Both of these things will help you to avoid concentration of effort in one area. Also, with time, you learn to lean forward or backward, point your toes, deep bend your knees, focus on arms or back muscles, etc. This keeps you from just focusing on moving the gliders back and forth. Stretches also warm up the muscles...whatever way you want to do it. I do stretches after the workout...feels awesome! One cool move that gives you a good bottom burn is to exercise at a nice clip and strech out as much as you comfortably can. Then, every 4 swings you hold them out for 2-3 seconds, alternating legs. I get to this about 3/4 into my workout. I love it more everyday. It's the only piece of equipment I don't regret getting ready to use. I workout 20 minutes on it every day with warm up and cool down, then I follow with either Pilates, weights, the CORE ball or The Firm (major exercise). When I don't have the time, I just do the 20 minutes on the Gazelle and feel great all day.
I called the Fitness Quest office yesterday to determine how much weight could be used with the Freestyle Gazelle; it will carry up to 350 pounds. For under $200 - or certainly at craigslist or resale, it's an awesome
buy.
Just remember to warm up, change up the workout and cool down. Stretching before or after is a plus. Also, remember to breath normally. I try to take some nice deep breaths throughout the workout, giving my body a good dose of long inhales and exhales. In fact, I just finished a workout and I feel absolutely wonderful. The plus is that it's a beautiful day in Ohio today, so I'll add a walk or two to the day. |
