Which is a better choice for getting lean instead of bulking up? I am trying to shed some baby weight and I want to use the one that benefits me the most.
We are in the market to purchase one or the other and I did not know which one is better.
I would love to run outside, but I will probably use the machine while the baby naps. Just needed to know someones thoughts on either machine. |

It's one of those age-old aruments like chocolate vs. vanilla.
What it comes down to is what's matters to you.
Elipticals:
Work upper and lower at the same time (Assuming you get one with the dual-action handlebars.)
Low impact on foot and leg joints
Reverse action to focus on different muscle groups
Treadmills:
More like actual walking/running and so are better for training if you plan to be an active walker or runner in 5K/10K events and such.
Offer more opportunity to vary the workout by changing inclines and speeds.
In short, either one will do what you want. It's really a personal choice. |

The two machines are so different I do both at the gym on alternating days.
The ellipticals a good machine but you have to be so careful with the resistance setting or your upper thighs will get larger instead of smaller.
The treadmills great but you really need to be set with a incline to get anywhere as far as burning more calories the harder the workout the more you will accomplish.
If I had to pick one it would be the elliptical just no hard resistance but set the cross ramp for up to 10 - 12 or pick variety setting so its like constantly changing you which burns more calories.

Thanks to both of you!!
I have used both before, but I really did not know which one I would rather have at home.
Sonya- I definitely do not want to add bulk so that is helpful about the resistance. I want to have more of a lean and tone body.
Thanks again |

Treadmills can be low impacts, if you walk instead of running. Brisk walking at higher inclination can be as good as running for the cardio, will reducing risk of joints injuries.
Personnally, I like better ellipticals, but in the end, the one you like better is probably the best to buy. At the gym, the best is to alternate. |

The machine you'll enjoy and spend the most time on......... is the best one to get!
I have both and don't care to use either, unless I "have" to.
For myself, I prefer running outside. Period.
But when you have little ones, that's not always an option I know.
As with anything, the more you put into your work-out, the more you'll get out of it no matter which machine you choose.
Your danger of bulking up on either is very minimal.
A treadmill on an incline and an ellliptical on high resistance..... both focus heavily on the "quads".
Plus, since us girls lack the testosterone levels of guys... we just don't "bulk" much.
FWIW, I am biased towards running for "lean and toned".......
but then, that's what I like to do. |

let me chime in here in favor of the elliptical. it's much easier on my knees. i bought one and keep it in my basement and work out on it for around 30 minutes every other day. (the alternate days i work out with small free-weights and take every wednesday as a rest day).
since i find any sort of aerobic exercise very boring, i listen to my iPod as i do the elliptical, and try to stay in time with the music, so i'm continualy switching speeds and resistance levels, and try to hit 400 calories on the meter (even though i know that it's probably set for someone with a higher bodyweight, still, it's an arbitrary point to aim for every time).
i find it interesting that some days i can just prance my way through at level 4, and other days i have to go down to level 2, or even 1. so some days it takes me a few minutes more to get to 400 calories, but i know that, fast or slow, i'm dong the same approxmate amount of exercise. |

| I personally think the elliptical is better. My mom has always been a exerciser and she liked the treadmill but she could never get her butt to get smaller.... then she started using the elliptical and it totally made it smaller. so if your going for the butt do elliptical. It works for me too. But if you dont watch it, it will make your thighs bigger so watch your intensity.. running makes your thighs big too so goodluck! |

I have a typical pear shaped body. I have struggled all my life to get rid of the 'junk in the trunk' & apparently 'Walking' should have solved that problem but I never lost weight off my Butt or Saddle Bags for that matter. Till I bought an Elliptical Bike, I tell you from personal experience that's the best combination ever. For the first time, I actually lost weight off my behind and my thighs shrunk like WOW.
So I'm all for 'Elliptical' if you have a pear shaped body. Otherwise, just about any machine and any exercise generally helps u lose weight but for a more specific melt-down :D I would STRONGLY recommend Elliptical
Best of Luck with your efforts :) |

| I use the elliptical alot but it made my butt bigger. But i need that. I am flat butted. It makes it interestign to fit my jeans from last season as the butt is tighter but I lost alot more belly fat. |

| If you are getting something for home, I think I would get the e-lip-tickle, just cause you can run or walk outside, but you cant e-lip-tickle outside. |

| I like ellipticals over treadmills. However, going outside to run is priceless to me. I also have a small child, so going outside is not always an option. |
