How do you effectively build a new wardrobe?

I have lost over 50 lbs since starting SB and closer to 60 lbs since deciding I "needed to do something" about my weight. I am a couple of pounds away from my goal which may not have been aggressive enough.

Even at my highest weight I was a pretty stylish guy and invested a sizable amount of money in my wardrobe. I didn't have too many clothes but most were very high quality and classic looks with some modern pieces.

Does anyone have ideas on how to rebuild a wardrobe after losing a lot of weight? Do you add pieces over time or just go hog wild at an outlet mall or your favorite store?

Did anyone "wait and see" if they lost more weight and whether they could maintain the existing weight before buying new clothes?

At risk of sharing TMI, realizing that nothing fits including my too baggy undies is sort of cool, going to the store and dropping $$$ on undies when the current supply has a lot of wear left is not that exciting and seems wasteful. Maybe I'll learn to alter undies..could be a cool project.

i've been slowly replacing by going to goodwill, consignment stores or ebay. I don't want to pay full price for new clothing when i am not sure it will fit once i reach my goal.

how baggy are we talking for the undies? i'd splurge and get another pack or so... :)

I'd say you always need a few classic pieces to any wardrobe. I wouldn't go nuts but get the essentials. Usually you can find really nice basics for a good price at places like Target. I wouldn't buy a whole new wardrobe, especially if you know you're going to keep losing weight but you should definitely get at least a bit.

a tailor might be able to fix some pieces for you....

not sure about the undies though....

I can empathize with this. I've spent a ridiculous amount of money on clothes over the last 1.5 years. I think I've single-handedly kept Old Navy in business! ;)

Every time I go down a size, I buy a couple pair of pants. I just continually buy shirts, which seem to last much longer, size-wise. But I literally have piles and piles of old clothes that I need to purge. I'm going to give some away and keep some for when/if I'm ever pregnant down the road...although I hope even when I'm pregnant I don't get that big again...

I shared what I could with those interested and donated the rest. The first year losing I was reluctant to buy new clothes for a very long time. It was strange-a part of the letting go of the old me. I would buy new pairs of classic black pants cheap since I had more to lose but again tried to buy little until close to my goal. Now my goal has changed and I look forward to buying single digit sized clothes. I am also addicted to work out wear which was very absent in my wardrobe when obese.

I would buy maybe some fitted things and some things that
can be a bit larger such as sweaters, sweats, jackets, loose
t shirts. These can go up and down a size range.

You might want to hold off on buying the expensive suits until
you see how your wt will stabilize, or if you do buy one have
the option for tailoring for your size.

Depends how prices those pieces you have are. If we're talking big $$$$$$ I would have them altered unless you felt it wouldn't be worth it. Don't know if you're "into" ebay but you could sell the old ones (not the undies) on ebay and buy new ones. I've sold some things that were worth a few more bucks then I'd get garagesaling them. But then again it depends on whether we're talking specialty store quality versus department store.
