Hi,

I was diagnosed with PCOS awhile back but have not stuck to taking the meds or started dieting yet. I am overweight by a lot and have facial hair issues. I filled my prescription for Metformin and Spironolact but when I tried out the Metformin for a few days taking minimal dose.. I had diarhea (sorry that is really embarrassing) really bad and it made my tummy upset. I have found this forum and am curious to find out if anyone has had this problem with Metformin and if so, did it go away? My doctor said that symptoms would get better if I could handle it for I think 2-4 weeks...

Also, I have quite a bit of weight to lose. At least 100 lbs I would say without actually weighing myself. Is the SBD working for you all with PCOS? I usually hit a 30 lb plateau with all diets and I believe some of that was due to PCOS. Having PCOS does this diet seem work well? Do you have to make any revisions to the diet or do you do it by the book?

Also, would you recommend I start the diet first then work my meds in? Or should I begin my meds then start the diet? Or should I do it all at once? I just would like to know any recommendations anyone has.

Also, my ob/gyn prescribed Spironolact for the facial hair... Has anyone had any success with that? How long does it take the facial hair to get better?

Sorry for all the questions. I don't even have the book yet. I want to make sure I am well informed.. Thanks for all your help!!!!!

I was diagnosed with PCOS and take 2000 mg of Metformin a day. The stomach issues have not changed for me. My doctor recommended taking it spread throughout the day instead of all at night. The Metformin isn't working for what my doctor intended, so I may not be on it much longer (it's been a year already).

My doctor suggested I lose weight to help with the PCOS. I was going to WW for quite a while and just couldn't lose more than the same 5 pounds (we're talking over a course of a year and with regular exercise). WW didn't teach you about how to control the cravings by the food you eat.

My best friend is a doctor and recommended SBD to me because I carry my weight around my stomach. She lost quite a bit of weight on SBD and has kept it off for years now. I've been doing this for just over a week now and I've already lost weight in my stomach - I can feel it! Pants I could not button up before are now comfortable. I haven't gotten on the scale yet though - I'm waiting until P1 is over. I don't want to be obsessed with weighing myself or with food, like I was on WW!

I used to spend a lot of time on the PCOS Pavilion Forum and I remember a lot of women there saying that if you have problems with the Metformin, you have to start low and build up GRADUALLY. That means that you start with a quarter pill if you have to, for a week or whatever, and then a half pill, etc. A lot of doctors don't either know to do this or don't bother telling anyone to do it. I know a lot of women on that forum said it helped them a lot.
I actually didn't have any gastrointestinal upset with Metformin, luckily, but I did start with 500 mg per day and did that for about a month before I went up and eventually ended up at 1500 mg per day. I also made sure I took it with meals.
Also, I think it is a good idea to start the metformin right away and also start on the diet. They help each other to work better.
Go to the PCOS Pavilion for lots of really good information.

Thank you... My doctor did tell me to start with 2 pills a day and work up to 4. I, however, think that I may need to start with 1 pill a day and work up that way... I wasn't sure how my stomach would handle starting the diet and medicine all at once.. I wasn't sure if it would have worse side affects. I will probably try starting the pills and after I get the books (should be in within 2 weeks!!! :)) I will start the diet after I read up on the proper way to eat. Thanks for the replies!
