| :?: I started the South Beach Diet (Phase 1) four days ago. By the 5th day, I was having an allergic reaction to everything I ate. My neck and upper chest would get very red and my throat started closing up after eating anything (protein, carbs, fruit, etc). I had to go to the Emergency walk-in clinic twice to get shots of epinephrine and steriods. I was also on my menstrual cycle at the time. Has anyone else experienced this type of reaction? I have heard that the SB Diet is tough on your liver and pancreas. Can anyone confirm or deny? |

| No, SB isn't hard on those organs. High-protein, low-carb diets can be, but SB isn't either one of those. I hope you feel better soon. Definitely follow this up with your doctor to find the cause. |

| Have you introduced a new food into your diet? Are you eating something new that you never really ate much of before such as specific types of nuts, dairy, or vegetables? Fruit and Grains aren't allowed on Ph 1. You should probably keep track of everything you are eating and see if any one food stands out that may be the cause. |

I know that these were posted a while ago, but I thought I would share my experience. When I was on Phase 1, I did really good sticking to the allowed foods, but I can't stand eggs...tried the quiche recipe in the book thinking that would be ok as it has other veggies in it and couldn't do it...so, I substituted eggs for tomatoes with cottage cheese and two slices of canadian bacon. Apparently, I got into a rut, because that's all I was eating for breakfast the entire two weeks I was on Phase 1. Close to the end of the 2nd week, I ended up breaking out into an itchy rash all over. After reading some of the concerns about bodies reacting to being 'deprived' of certain minerals and vitamins I thought that was the problem, but after going into an urgent-care clinic over the weekend the Dr. told me that it was a clear sign of an allergic reaction. I couldn't think of anything at the time that I was eating differently then I had before...but, after a while I figured out I was probably turning myself into one human-sized tomato! Cottage cheese and tomatoes for breakfast for two weeks, plus tomatoes in my salads that I had either for lunch or dinner, plus whatever tomatoes I would occasionally cook with for dinner.
I still eat tomatoes every once in a while, but my suggestion would be, if you find yourself reacting differently to the foods you're eating, pay attention to how often you're eating them. Even though the food list for Phase 1 is limited try to change it up. Too much of one thing isn't always a good thing! :( |

Well I guess whenever trying new foods, as I have with sbd, it wouldn't be bad idea to keep up with when/what you ate. Kinda like when you give babies first solids. You never know what someone is going to be allergic to. Might also be a good idea to only introduce one new food into your diet at a time.
As far as the organ stress...I've read nothing that indicates so. I don't see how a balanced diet can strain your organs. This is low fat/carb/whatever; just healthy and balanced. |
