I don't know what to expect?

Hi, I'm Racqel, I'm 20 yrs old and I just started the SBD yesterday. I weigh 165lbs and my 1st goal is to lose 30lbs. I have tried so many diets since I was 13, and I've never been able to stick to one diet. I'm always going back and forth between diets because I can never seem to find one thats is right for me. My moms doctor has recommended this diet to her, so I thought that I would try it too. I've also never really had a lot of support while I was trying to diet....I always had to pay for some membership, or pay for a meeting just to get help or support. I was amazed when this website didn't ask me for a credit card number!
I'm wondering, to anyone who has experience, If I stick to it, what kind of results should I see? I'm not expecting to lose 10lbs in the 1st week or anything crazy like that. I'd just like to know what to expect. How often should I weigh myself? I used to weigh myself 2 or 3 times a day depending on my mood. But If I was happy the scale always seemed to upset me every time!
What about exercise? How often should I do it? And for how long? I like to go on walks at night, but to be honest, I haven't done that in months. I know that I need some type of help and support if I'm going to succeed.
I don't want to give up! I want to do it this time for real! I want to go shopping again and not be depressed when I try on clothes. I hate going to the mall and seeing women my age with skinny, toned bodies, who can wear whatever they want because anything looks good! Many women like to go shopping....I hate it!
My boyfriend isn't a big help either. He gives me compliments daily and that makes me feel good, but whenever I talk to him about losing weight, he gets angry. He tells me that I'm beautiful the way I am and he doesn't want me to lose weight, he says he loves my curves. He also tells me that he is afraid that I'll leave him for someone else if I get skinny and confident....NOT TRUE!!!
I don't know what to do about him!!! I do know that he doesn't support me, so I need to get form some place else!
HELP!!!!!

Hi Racqel!

Welcome to the boards! This is the BEST place to get help and encouragement as you start on SB..especially since it's free! :) As far as results, it just depends on the person — what you were eating before, how much you exercise, how much you have to lose, etc. It requires a long-term commitment, patience and discipline, but once you get used to the SB way of life, it actually just becomes second nature. As far as exercise goes, some people don't exercise at all and still see results, but it's not advised. Healthy weight loss requires changes in diet and exercise. I used to huff and puff just going up a flight of stairs. Now I exercise six days a week, doing jogging, elliptical, bike, aerobics, weights. I feel great! Plus, the more you exercise, the more you'll see a difference in the way your clothes fit, even if the scale's not moving at first. It's nice that your bf gives you compliments about your curves, but unfortunate that he's not supporting you the way you need. It sounds like you want to lose weight for YOU, and that's great. It's all about getting healthy. Not sure if you've done it already, but I'd recommend reading the SB book and checking out the "stickies" on the top of the pages here. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions! :D

The only expectations I would set is to expect to read and learn about good nutritional concepts, to eat a variety of good healthy foods including lots of vegetables, and to lose weight over time as your body is ready to let it go while you adopt a lifetime healthy eating and exercise program that will support your heart and health for the rest of your life. I personally would not tie time frames to weight loss goals as it only seems to ultimately create frustration over unmet expectations.

Ditch the insecure boyfriend! j/k (sort of... ;) )

You can expect TONS of support, ideas and information from everyone on this site. It's freely given in the spirit of working together. Remember, we all have the same goal - whether we're trying to lose 5 lbs, 50 lbs or 150 lbs. In that way, we're all in this together.

You can expect that it will sometimes be hard. There will be times when some temptation or another, or some life event makes it hard for you to stick to the plan. That's the time when you need to turn to your buddies here. Use the strength and advice we have to offer you to overcome those difficulties. Changing habits is never easy. If it were, diet books, weight-loss pills and stop-smoking products wouldn't be billion dollar businesses.

You can expect that your overall health will improve over time if you stick with the program.

Most of all, you have to expect yourself to DO this. You can lose weight. You can be healthier. You need to focus on what you CAN do, and don't dwell on the negative thoughts that got you to this point.

No one can tell you you're going to lose XXX on phase 1 or XXX every week. No one can tell you it's going to take XXX months to reach your goal. What we can tell you is that if you follow the program, you can expect to gradually lose weight. For you, that might be 8-11 lbs on phase 1 like the sticker on the book says. It might be half a lb.

Start a journal. You can record what you eat, or just record your thoughts. Stick around here and read what the experienced folks have to say. Ask questions when you have them. There's a lot to learn, and lots of people here willing to share their knowledge. You say you need support - that's what we're here for.

You can do it!

Thanks to all of you for your advice and support. It feels good to know that there are people that are going through what I'm going through, or who have went through what I'm going through and know the ropes.
Its only my 2nd day on SBD, but I feel better already! I love vegetables, especially cooked ones with some salt (cauliflower, brocolli and green beans). I just don't know why I've never really eaten a lot of them before??? And I don't feel ashamed to eat as much of them as I want!
My 21st B-day is coming up in February and I want to lose 30lbs by then. I'm not going to set some crazy goal just to be dissapointed and discouraged. But I think that a goal of 30lbs in 5 months is pretty resonable. I know of people that have lost that in 2, but I'm not going to push it. I want to succeed! This time it's for real!!!
