I seriously can't believe the things people really say out loud! I don't get it - I mean I think you'd have to be ignorant to say something so incredibly rude! I wouldn't even think of saying something like this to someone - for 1 because it's hurtful - but also because it's just wrong (like some unwritten code - you just DON'T do it) and I would feel like an idiot and a horrible person.

I can't even believe people have the nerve.. and think it's ok. :?

Thanks everyone for the good suggestions! I fumed about it for a couple of days, I mean it really, really, bothered me. But after reading you're comments it has made me feel better. Next time this happens (and I hope it never does) I will be better prepared with my comback. Thanks to all of you!! :D

AS far as i am concerned, it does not matter why a person became overweight, there can be so many factors!

It is so easy for people to judge and jump to the wrong conclusions when they have not been there themselves.....but still there is never an excuse for being rude and totally insensitive!

I get upset if people mention that i have put on weight...i mean why even mention it...it's like they think i hadn't noticed...maybe i am too sensitive

My husband grandfather is like that. Any time anyone gains some weight he has something to say about it. He did that to me one time at a Christmas gathering, I just looked at him and said, " yea but it will be alright". And never let it bother me. Next time someone says something mean like that compliment then. It shows you are a better person than they are. If people know they can get under your skin they will continue to do so. Act like it doesn't bother you or just agree with them and they'll move on to someone who they can bother. My husband loves to argue so when he gets in those moods to complain about something stupid and points it out i just agree with him and he shuts up. It takes 2 to hold a conversation.

I may be overweght, but you're rude. I can go on a diet - where are you going to buy a new personality?

I have the gift of quick-comebacks. Unfortunately, my mouth doesn't always know when to work, or when to just THINK a come-back. I'm with Lessa - stop them dead in their tracks!

"You've gained so much weight I almost didn't recognize you!" "Oh, I know what you mean! When did you decide to let your hair go grey?"

"You've gained so much weight since I last saw you - I mean a LOT!"

"Yeah, it's because I keep hanging around people who feed me bull****!"

The other day my best friend's husband (who's tact and humor has never made it past the 7th grade) told us "Well, you WOMEN swarm together like flies on a sh**pile!"

And I shot back, "Yeah, well we're both standing within a foot of you, aren't we?" He was STUNNED. He looked at my husband of 13 years, who said "Dude, don't go there. Just don't."

One of my favorite lines from Ron White: "Just remember - You can't fix STUPID. Stupid is forever!"

tyna'knot, Love all your come backs! Maybe I'll use some of them especially the grey hair one, it seems to me it's always the older folks that say the rude things to me, so there you go a great come back. Thanks! :)

Some people sadly think that aging gives them license!

One of my favorite comebacks (only used when someone has gone wayyy over the top in rudeness) is:

"Are you always this rude, or is this a special occasion?"

I would say, "Really? That's funny, because I was just thinking - I don't remember you being so rude."
I'm sorry you've had to deal with such awful people but as many before me have said, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS!

**I know EXACTLY what you're going through. I had 2 surgeries on my lower back to repair two ruptured discs. Like you, I had to quit the things I loved (sports) and over the course of the next few years I went from a svelt 125-190. I too am trying to climb back down the ladder!

Keep up the good work...you're not alone! I'm right there with you! :D
