| Hi guys, I know this is totally unrelated to SBD but I guess I just need people's opinion. I'm currently trying to fundraise for a breast cancer event, do you think it is ok for me to ask my co-workers if they would like to donate? I mean if they say no I will not push it, but can I ask it at all? |

In my office this is acceptable. I've given some pointers as to methods that have been done in my office. We have 70+ people and typically get involved in a few charities a year. A lot of the times, a person that is close to a cause will be the driving force on the latest fund raiser. One person rallied for cystic fibrosis b/c it effects someone close to her family- I recently pushed for March of Dimes because of my experience with my son...
If you have an office-wide weekly meeting, that would be a good venue to bring up the issue publicly and then anyone interested can contact you. You can explain to everyone why the raising money for this cause is important to you to compel people to donate.
I would steer away from personally asking on a one on one basis- just seems awkward.
You could also write an e-mail that gets distributed to the entire office. People that did not attend the meeting will also be informed, it can serve as a reminder to those that did attend. If you don't have a weekly meeting to bring up the issue in the first place, then the e-mail can serve as your main communication. |

We do this in my office a lot. We are huge fundraisers for the American Cancer Society.
Typically, an email is best. At this point, you can explain the purpose of the money gathering and if there is a story that goes with it, you can share it at that time.
I know in my office, people are more than willing to donate. You might be surprised how little proding it takes for a good cause. |
