September Warrior Challenge

Since I am new at running a challenge, I thought that I would try something different. In this challenge there will be no teams. The objective of the challenge will be to reinforce exercise and being beachy while still having fun and enjoying life.

The challenge will be broken down into 4 stages, (weeks).
Stage 1, Monday, September 3rd through Sunday, September 9th.
Stage 2, Monday, September 10th through Sunday, September 17th.
Stage 3, Monday, September 17th through Sunday, September 24th.
Stage 4, Monday, September 24th through Sunday, September 30th.

Journaling.
In order for me, your Sōke, in this challenge to help track your progress, journal entries of your daily progress will be required. (BTW, this does not mean that the entries must be entered daily.)

Standard Points
The following points can be earned in each stage:
1 point for every 30 minutes of aerobic exercise for a maximum of 6 points per stage.
1 point for every 30 minutes of strength exercise for a maximum of 6 points per stage.
2 points for every “beachy” day for a maximum of 12 points per week.

Stage Special Points
Special Points, up to 4 points, will be awarded in each stage. The criteria for the special stage points will be announced the first day of the stage.

Challenge Special Points
Special points, up to 8, for making or approaching your personal goal. If your personal goals is to loose ‘n’ number of pounds and you lose all ‘n’, you will get all 8 points. If you lose only ‘n’/2 pounds, you gain 4 points. Same thing if your goal is to gain or lose inches. Do what is meaningful to you.

Weight and Other Measurements
If weight and other measurements are required for your personal goal, they can be taken on the two days preceding the beginning and the first day of the challenge. Record the measurement that helps you the most. The end measurements can be taken on the last 3 days of the challenge. Again record the measurement that helps you the most. You do not have to repeat the measurement each day, so that if you only measure your weight at the gym and you do not normally do not go to the gym on Saturdays, just use Sunday’s or Monday’s.

Definition of “Beachy” and Types of Exercise
“Beachy” is a term used a lot in this forum. It means staying to the South Beach Diet that is appropriate for you. If you are phase 1 or and early phase 2 the diet is pretty well defined. If you are a phase 2 cruising into phase 3, it is less defined. Please note that there is a maximum of 12 points for being Beachy, so you have a free day in case you slip a bit.
Aerobic exercise has a number of formal definitions which I will not go into here. Unless you are a complete exercise nut like me, do only the aerobic exercise that is appropriate to your current condition. This may change during the challenge and that is okay. If walking is the best for you, walk. If you have to go all out, go all out and run or do BodyCombat. Just make sure it is done for at least 30 minutes at a time. The purpose of the challenge is to get you to like (or love) exercise.
Strength exercises are exercises such as weight training, BodyPump, yoga, etc. Again only do what is appropriate for your current physical condition.

Last word on exercises both aerobic and strength, the exercise is not complete without stretching at the end of the exercises. Exercise shortens the muscles and stretching lengthens them back to normal.

Tallying of Points.
A special thread, September Warrior Tally, will be set up for the recording of points at the end of each stage. The format of tally sheet will be the first message on that thread. Please copy the format and then add it as a reply for your tally. After the first week, just edit your initial reply with the new points. Please try to get your points in as soon as possible.

Awards
In each stage there is a maximum of 28 points. Anyone who makes 20 points in Stage 1 will be titled September Warrior 1. Anyone who makes 22 points in Stage 2 will be titled September Warrior 2. Anyone who makes 24 points in Stage 3 will be titled September Warrior 3. Finally anyone who makes 26 points in Stage 4 will be titled September Warrior 4. For the whole Challenge, anyone who has a total of 96 points will be given the title of September Challenge Warrior.

Discussion Thread.
A special thread, September Warrior Discussion, will be set up for discussion of the progress of the challenge. Please visit this thread often to share information on how you are doing, to encourage others, and to offer help to those who are having problems. Some of the Special Stage points will require the use of the September Warrior Discussion!
