A plea for your help and advice...

I started SB almost 3 years ago. Dropped from 320 to about 265. Awesome, right? I thought so. Since then I've started Phase 1 about 9 times. Each time starts out good, but it doesn't last. This post from May 2007 sums it up... (Since then, I've re-started a few times, but haven't gone anywhere).

Phase 1 for a week - very little cheating, 7-12 lbs lost
Phase 2 strong for 2 weeks - bit of cheating, losing 0-2 lbs
Then off for weeks... Phase 3 for a bit, followed by cheating that just gets worse and worse. You know, after you've had a piece of cheesecake it's easy to have some cookies, fries, cake, you name it. And since I know I'm "just around the corner" from Phase 1, I may as well eat everything else I love to get the cravings out of my system. And I wait until Monday or Tuesday to start because it's easy for me to stay on Phase 1 during the week. But sometimes I don't get up early enough on Monday to make a good breakfast and lunch, same thing Tuesday, and then I'm stuck waiting until next week.

I'm stuck in this cycle and I can't get out. I know South Beach works, I've experienced it. when I stick to my guns I'm successful. I haven't stepped on the scale in months, but I'm guessing I'm close to my starting weight. To be frank, I feel like crap and I know why, but I just haven't been able to get fired up like I was in the early days. When I originally started I was so excited, and I did very well. I worked it for a good 6 months.

If you want see the sad decline, just read the last 2-3 pages of my journal. You'll see the many times I swore "this is it for the rest of my life", but it's now very clear telling myself this isn't enough.

So I ask: Any advice for a very obese guy who wants to be thin, energetic, and a great dad to his two wonderful kids?

First off your children are beautiful. You are very lucky.

Secondly you have to make your choice. Do you want to be around for them when they grow? Do you want to play baseball with them? Do you want to go camping? Hiking? to their graduations? watch their first date?
Then you will have to start taking care of you.

I know for a fact that no one can make that choice but yourself. Heck I just made that choice in April. Sure I have screwed up sometimes but I know I want to see things in the future. My 13 year old nephews wedding in the future. Myself not miserable.

Come visit the gabby gathering over on the phase two board. Basicly it is just a group of people who help each other stay focused. We encourage each other though. I can't stress how important that is. When I just feel like everything is to much I can go there and read and see that other people are going through the same thing as me and you. Please come and visit. We love new people.

And you know what? You CAN do this. You can.

I am in the same boat and understand completely!

It is easy when one is overweight and unhappy with yourself to think another day won't hurt, i will start tomorrow...that gives relief to eat what you want for a day whilst getting excited for the new fresh start tomorrow.

However when morning comes the cycle starts again :?

There is no magic wand, you make a choice and stick to it!!! It is tough to begin with but it does get easier.

The problem is when you start eating the trigger foods like cheesecake and so on...the cravings start up and the cycle begins again and the weight piles on!

Healthy eating is for life!

A tip....

Do not use the words can't have or not allowed....then you only want it more. Instead think you can have, but why would you want it...you are free to choose!

such great help here already. So many know what you are
going through.

I notice when I eat junk I want junk, think of junk and crave junk.

It is a cycle and the nonutritive factor of junk food probably does
make us want to eat extra just to get more nutrients.

Think of how you feel when you eat better. Think of your beautiful
kids seeing you eating and enjoying the healthier foods (especially
fruit and veggies).

As someone posted try having a lot of activities with them. This
gives them a foundation of healthy habits and active lifestyle.

(junk food costs a lot and you could be putting that into fun
activity stuff).

Make sure you eat/make a cheesecakey (check out the recipe
section) SB type dessert. Why not just go to Phase 2 this time
which offers some more foods. The program has some delicious
foods and you should not be feeling hungry like on other diets.

I would make sure to keep all junk (and cheesecake) out of the
house, and always be ready to start a diet on your next meal!

Never stay in the trap of I will start tomorrow/Monday as that
just encourages now or never eating and the diet always gets
put off for yet another reason. (I used to do this and eat
quite a lot on weekends - you are not the only one doing this).

Thank you all so much, including those who PM'd me... I've started the book again (for the 5th time, but probably the first time in a year and half) and I'm starting to get excited again. This weekend is a big one, and rather than risk failing, I'm going to put this off (I know, I know  ) until Tuesday. Then, that's it!

Oh - I did weigh in yesterday. 310, which is 10 lbs short of my heaviest ever. So I've got a long way to go, but I know it's worth it.

The real breakthrough would be if you started right now, instead of waiting til Tuesday. :D
