I just am seeking your opinion when you look at others working out at the gym. I know you might say, "I only focus on myself", but in that case, this is for those who are people watchers. And I think, deep down, most of you probably do it.
Perhaps if someone is really overweight, you might think "good for them, trying to get healthier". (Or not, just an example.) Perhaps if someone is really fit, you might strive for similiar goals (if you aren't, yet, yourself). What about when someone is super skinny? Do you judge them? What about the overly muscled, working out like it's the last thing they'll do on earth? Them?
I'm looking for honest opinions! |

| Seriously? As long as someone is working hard and seems to have a clue, then they have my respect. Otherwise, I have no patience for people. That has nothing to do with their weight or fitness, though. I don't go to gyms anymore. Maybe that says it all. |

the only people i really notice and form opinions on at the gym are those who do things to draw attention to themselves. they basically fall into two categories:
1) the guys who try to show off their strength and grunt overly loud so everyone knows they are exerting themselves. these are also the guys who get impatient if they have to wait for someone to do their reps on a machine. i don't appreciate being watched like a hawk and made to feel like i am inconveniencing you and stopping you from doing your 1-2 reps with a maxed out weight buddy.
2) the teeny tiny girls who wear short shorts and sports bras and loudly complain to one another about how "fat" they are. please!
beyond that no matter the age, shape or fitness level of the person, i feel a general sense of commaradarie. we are all on the same path to getting and staying healthy. |

| I really don't pay any attention to anyone in the gym except the people who are taking my spinning classes. Those are the only people that I look at. If there is any judging going on then I would either say to myself "they are kickin ass on the bike" or "come on you lazy" or "need to work on their form". As far as the people who do machines and weights ... don't even bother looking at them. Thats the honest truth. |

Maybe it is my Health Club or maybe it is the time of day I am at the Health Club, I think the place is filled with happy, hard working, people. But then again, what other types would be there at 5:30 AM Monday through Friday? You can tell who are the ‘newbies’ who keep to themselves but if they are working out in the courses repeatedly, they seem to join in the friendly atmosphere within a few times. And the others that are not in the classes, which include people in seventies and eighties using the hot pool to spinners in their twenties, also have this happy and open attitude.
I have also noticed that in the outdoor pool and deck, the same friendly attitude exists no matter the shape the person is in.
And as a last point of interest about the people at the club, if a person who regularly comes to a class does not show up for a class or two, the others are concerned! |

| That sounds like my gym Bob. We are all pretty much friends in there or like family so nobody really "looks" or "judges" anyone at my gym. We are all happy as well. |

| I go to a lot of BodyPump classes and I can't stand the people who load up their bars with an impressive amount of weight, and then do the exercises either lazily or with bad form (or both!). For example: I would be so much more impressed if you used small weights and squatted to a 90 degree angle, then if you use 2 large ones and barely bend your knees. |

I just realized that you are the one who posted this thread ha! ha! I was being honest though. I also think it depends where you are living. Big cities tend to be more "judgemental". I live in a rural town we are all pretty much friendly and more easy going than the hard core city folk out there!! |

People with bad form in BodyPump (also a favorite of mine along with BodyCombat and BodyStep) either end up hurting themselves or wasting their time!
That 90 degree angle is ideal but be careful not to drop the butt below knee level - ouch!!! (Evilly bad form!) |

tHINGS THAT ANNOY ME ARE......
People sitting and hogging a machine while just sat talking and using tthe gym like a social club...this tends to be the early morning pensionists!
The guys that use weights that are too heavy for them and throw them around trying to look cool, rather than going down a weight and using proper form.
Gym bimbos all glammed up and in their skimpy gear to go on the pull rather than work out!
I love to see older people and overweight people at the gym.....we don't see it enough...we are all there for the same reason, it does not matter how good one looks in lycra! |

What about you?
I am not a people watcher as such, but i think we all notice others around us.
What is your opinion on others at the gym? |

| Lisa - my question is underlying, about myself. I don't go to the gym anymore. I live in a small place where we know everyone, so the gym is more social, anyway. If I went to a huge gym, I tend to people-watch (in general, everywhere), and probably would there, too, but I also just focus on what I am doing. But I constantly wonder if people are thinking about myself - which sounds shallow, but I don't mean it that way. I'm just insecure. |
