Why don't you go to the gym anymore?
I wouldn't worry about being watched as such, we only notice the people that stick out such as smelly sweaty bods or loud people chucking weights around etc |

| Due to illness, I lost about 60lbs in a couple months, and was 78lbs. I wasn't allowed to work out - although that was the last thing on my mind. I am tentative to return as I am still quite thin, and I am worried people might think, 'why is SHE here?'. I hate rumours and gossip. |

I am sorry to hear you were so ill, that is a tremendous amount of weight to have lost in such a short time.
I was also ill last year, so i know how distressing it can be and all the worries that go with it.
When you are feeling well again and get the all clear, don't let what others think put you off living life to the full etc......chances are they are not even thinking it anyway!
Thin people go to the gym too in order to increase their fitness and build up their muscles to give them a nice toned shape....the gym isn't just for overweight bods and bodybuilders. |

| Do you plan on going back to the gym where you live? Don't they all know you were ill?? I think small town folk are a little bit more understanding than if you went to a big gym in the city. I think where you live sounds like a bit like my town. We are all friendly with each other at the gym and if some bozo does happen to say something about you I'm sure the members will have your back. |

| It's not small enough that they all would know. I want to build muscle, and I am just getting sick of my free weight routines at home. I'm so small that I'm still embarrassed. I dont want to wear a heavy hoody and pants though to hide it! Oh well :) |

Just go for it girl. Just focus on yourself and ignore whatever is there. I get so into my workouts that I don't even realize anyone around me.
Are there any group power classes at your gym? Those classes are fun and they work on every muscle in your body. |

| Sounds good but I'm definitely too weak for those. I'm very symptomatic and have to do my own pace. :) |

| I see. I'm happy that you at least want to go to the gym and do your own thing. You are already determined and focused lorka. Let me know when you go and I will send you some positive vibes!! |

people who have a bad attitude about "skinny" people at the gym are insecure and jealous, if you ask me ... we always assume that people are there to lose weight, but exercise and fitness are important for everyone regardless of their body shape and type ... maybe the skinny girls need to be there so they stay thin, or maybe they don't want to be skinny and are trying to build muscle ... you never know what someone's goals are and regardless of how they look, they ARE getting healthier just being there working out.
my boyfriend is a complete twig and i really try to get him to work out. he resists because there's no sense of urgency since he's not overweight, but i [15 lbs. overweight] am healthier and in better shape than he is because i get exercise and he doesn't. just moving your body is important.
lork, i'm sorry you feel self-conscious about going to the gym but at the end of the day, you need to do whatever you need to do to be as healthy as your body will allow. if people at the gym gawk and have a bad attitude about someone as thin as you being there, that's their problem, not yours. go there, do your thing, and forget the rest. :) |

| I had a friend in college who couldn't gain weight for the life of her so we started hiking together. I needed to lose weight and she wanted to be curvier. I just wished I could give her some of mine. Maybe you could find a walking buddy? That way you'll get out of the house and get moving but you will have someone to help take your mind off of being so self concious. Plus it'll be more fun! |
