How many pounds equate to one dress size?

Does it vary person to person?

I'm 5'9" with a large frame... I weigh probably 215-220 and I fit into a size 16/18 (sometimes 14 on a good day). When I was 190 lbs I wore a size 13/14. But if I follow this equation, it would mean that it takes 20 pounds for me to change a dress size??? So at 170, I'd be a size 11/12 and then 150 a size 8/10? Does that sound right???

I'm just trying to figure out my goal size, since I'm not weighing myself for a few months.

I remember reading somewhere that for every 10 pounds a person loses they go down one size. However in my case this is absolutely not true. I started out at a tight fitting size 14 back in March. I have lost 29.5 pounds so far. However I am still wearing my size 12 clothes even though they are starting to get a little loose on me. However, the size 10's are still way too tight for me to be comfortable in.

What a great question, one I too would like to know the answer to, too. I have nothing to offer in terms of an answer, but I wonder if it is subjective to each person. Losing inches and all that. Just a thought. I feel like there must be a general poundage though.

This is one of those things that varies drastically from person to person.

Each one of us puts on weight in different areas of our bodies. Also, 10 lb weight loss on someone who is 5'9" is going to look very different from 10 lb weight loss on someone who is 5'2".

I personally have fluctuated up to 15 lb up without changing sizes (and I'm pretty short), although my clothes were certainly fitting snugger.

I'm down 2 sizes - used to wear a 12 and now wear an 8 - and I've lost 20lbs. But that's in trousers/jeans. In tops/shirts it's not been that noticeable. I'm not sure if I've moved a size or not.

2/3

The rule of thumb is 10-15 pounds per dress size. However, exercising can help you lose "inches" but no weight, and you may lose sizes that way as well.

At 180 - I was a dress size 12-14. Now at about 155 I'm a dress size 8-10. So that's about the average I would say. But at was stated, exercise makes a difference as well (in size but not always weight).

I think it also totally depends on the clothes maker. I think the 2's and 4's now are like 6 and 8's used to be.

I have gone from a size 10 in one brand of pants, to a size 4 in the same brand. That's going from 150 lbs to 120, and I'm 5'2".

That's true. People who say they lost 10 lb and lost a dress size they were probably boarderline. If the 16 was tight at your highest weight, it will take 20 lbs to get into a 14 of the same manufacturer. Once again, weight is relative. It depends on muscle to fat ratio and where your fat decides to deposit itself, but the 20lb rule has always worked for me.

It varies on your shape/fitness too.

A couple years ago, I was working out an average of 1.5hrs a day. I started at a size 8 @ 140 lbs and in about 4 months, I was a size 4 @135 lbs...that was a 5 lb loss and a 2 size difference, but I was very in shape. I'm also short-ish, but there are just SO many variables.

There probably is a certain percentage that you could apply this rule to, assuming the fitness level is the same. Such as for every 8% (of your original weight) you lose a size?

It all seems very subjective. I guess it truly depends on your body. 20 pounds sounds a bit daunting, I don't think it took me 20 to move UP a size, hopefully it won't take that much to move down. But for each person it is different it seems!
