Horror novel and movie lovers thread

I am a avid reader. I love a good horror novel. I also love a good horror movie. I am hoping that I can find like minded people to chat about them with.

I have finally figured out what makes horror good for me.

It is the What if? factor. What if rats really did come out of the sewer dead and started attacking people. What if there was a cemetery that if you buried something in it at a certain time would come back to undead life. What if you bought a house and things started getting weird and you started seeing ghosts. What if things fell from the sky and turned into carbon copies of people while killing the original person leaving only a few survivors left.

It is mostly things that are close to reality in a way.

I was never scared of the Freddy or Jason type movies. But the Amityville horror, Invasion of the body snatchers, Hellraiser type always got me.

See it is the this could happen. I could unknowingly pick up an ancient toy and open a portal to hell. Things could float down from outer space. An ancient evil spirt could exist. Ghosts do exist.

I am currently reading Dead Sea by Brian Keene.

It is a zombie novel. Actually it is pretty damn good. I had read the blurb in the back of another book in June but the book didn't come out until July. I went to the bookstore in July and they didn't have it. In the meantime I had joined a horror book club where they send you two horror novels a month and it came in my first package. I was so excited lol. You should look into the horror book club if you like horror.

Trouble begins when a virus infecting the rat population of New York City begins spreading among animals and humans alike?one bite, one drop of blood or one string of saliva is all it takes to kill its victims, within minutes, and instantly revive them as mindless, flesh-eating zombies. Narrating this grim tale is gay 30-something Lamar Reed, who makes a hair-raising trip through the carnage of zombified Baltimore before he and a small group of survivors manage to commandeer a Coast Guard ship and get it out to sea. Together, the eclectic group search the coast for a safe harbor; meanwhile, an endless parade of zombies search the survivors' floating haven for a way in. Keene piles on the gory thrills as Lamar and his shipmates struggle through this diseased world

What are you guys reading?

I'm actually not reading anything at the moment (booooo, haven't had time, and I've read all the books I've got laying around!). I'd be interested in that horror book club you're talking about though! I've always been into horror, even as a child. Of course, back then R.L. Stine was my author of choice. I'd have to say though, my first real book was Suffer the Children by John Saul. First movie (by accident) was It, and it scared the crap out of me. I was too young really to watch it, but just happened upon it accidently. I was so scared to sit on the toilet for days after that.

I had been a member a while back and loved getting the surprise package of books. For some reason I stopped. I decided I needed them again. I was so happy when I got the first package.
You get the first two books for free.

just click the horror button and sign me up at the bottom. You get the two books for something like $8.50. Totally cheap!

I just finished Dead sea. Excellent book. The ending surprised me.

Ahh, Dead Sea sounds freaky! I love zombies and zombie movies, that whole post-apocolytic plotline...always gets me. I agree it is totally the What IF...what if a virus really broke out among rats...? What if an infected monkey bit someone and caused a virulant outbreak? For some reason 28 days later really scared the crap out of me! Maybe cause that was the first movie we watched with the surround sound hooked up and it sounded like zombies were running in from all corners of the house! I also love the classic Romero zombie films too. I am not really reading anything horror related right now. Just had to comment cause I love this genre! Have you ever seen the show supernatural? I just watched the first two episodes last night and it seemed pretty good!
As for books, I wouldn't say it is horror at all, but more of a post apocolyptic distopic reality, Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, was really excellent. I read Stoker's Dracula a few years back, and I think while parts were creepy and disturbing, a lot of it was kind of ... boring... ! Too long! But whatever, I love vampires too, and it is such a classic, I'm glad I read it.

Can't do horror movies at all. Ok, this is so sad but I am almost 60 and if I were to watch any part of a horror movie and then have to go to the basement, my dh would have to stand at the top of the stairs and talk to me the whole time and preferably stand on the landing where I can see him. Is that not pitiful? :(

I do like to read John Saul books and I love Dean Koontz. But unfortunately Koontz is venturing off into the mystery genre every once in a while .

I was reading this thinking you sound just like my aunt Sandy, and then I see you're from MO, and then your name IS Sandy.

I love the chills you can get from a good horror novel or movie. I fully admit to turning off the hall light and ending up running into the bedroom to get away from the dark. I am also able to scare myself silly when I am home alone.

One time I was so relaxed and the stupid dogs start running down the hallway barking their brains out. Now it is almost midnight and I have been reading a horror novel and the dogs never ever have done that before.
I looked like this ----->
I still don't know what the heck was wrong with those dogs!

I remember when I was younger, and I had just watched a Freddy Krueger movie. I'm shutting off the lights, and all of the sudden I hear this scraping noise in the kitchen. I almost wet myself!! It was just a frying pan that had shifted in the sink, but I was scared out of my mind!
