I've been running 4.5 miles in 42 minutes at about 7 mph. I do walk 6 minutes of that at 4 mph at certain intervals. Anyway last week I felt a little pain in my right knee on the outside - I can't tell you online how upsetting this is - I love running. However, I can do the elliptical and the pain is nonexistent. How long do you feel I should do the elliptical so I can be at the equivalent of my running- I know they are two seperate beasts, but I want to make sure I'm still doing a nice workout. Thanks!

I am having the same knee trouble with running too!! I'm doing swimming and elliptical more often as a result. I feel the same way. I just posted about this on the runner's thread.
When I do elliptical, I usually do more than what I do if I were running. I usually run for about 30-35 minutes, so I do elliptical for about 45. I usually do between level 7-10 (out of 20) at a speed of about 60 (give or take 5), but I am at a lower fitness level than you!!! I know that all ellipticals are different, so I don't know if this helps. I don't like elliptical as much because my feet always seem to go numb, but I still get a good work out when I do the above!
You may want to try swimming laps, too! No impact, and it is a refreshing change of pace!
Good luck! |

On the elliptical you're moving your arms as well so working more muscles.
You could do it by distance and try to cover the same distance on the elliptical, however long it takes. I think that's the fairest way to do it.
The thing I like about the elliptical is being able to go backwards and therefore work the muscles in a slightly different way.

Just a thought...
How long have you been running? Do you have good RUNNING shoes? Are you stretching enough before and after each run?
The reason i'm saying that is... When I first started running (which is not soo long ago btw) i've had knee problems and I was very discouraged because I just felt I could never run because of that. I discovered that you need a good pair of shoes and that stretching before and after (at least 10 min) really helped me. Since then...i've been pain free in my knee and I can run on consecutive days no problem. Maybe you won't have to switch completely to the elliptical if you love running that much! :D |

| Thanks for all the help! I do have good running shoes and have been doing fine since my last surgery in January of 2006. Even then, I fell in my garage and hurt my knee. I am stumped as to why this is happening. I am guilty maybe of not stretching enough. |
