upper body strength help?

I need some help from those in the know. I injured my hand last week while chopping vegetables, so right now I have stitches.

I usually like to do push-ups while working out but until the stitches come out that's not really an option, and even if I had easy access to weights or a gym I wouldn't be able to use my hand well enough to make use of them.

Are there some calisthenic-style exercises that I can do for the next several days that will build muscle in my arms and shoulders without making much use of my hands? Preferably requiring no equipment, I can't spare the cash right now -- my usual exercise equipment is my own body and an old cushion that I use to keep my knees and back off the hard floor.

I like to see that max number of push-ups go up day by day and I'll be disappointed if the number drops a lot by the time I next get to do them.

Thanks :D

Use arm circles (shoulder width apart, arms out on each side at shoulder height in circular motion). Foward 18-20 reps, back the same. Rest for a few seconds then repeat.

Another is to stand a little wider than shoudler length, then put your arms at chest height, and twist from the waist so that the shoulder faces the front, about 18-20 times. (use a bar, too, if you want and have one)

feel better - i've sliced and burned many hands, arms and fingers in the kitchen.

My thought would be to pick up a stability ball.

You could still do your push ups (concentrate your weight on your arms not your hands)....... and most are not too pricey.

Here's a page (with upperbody workouts) from Sparkpeople, that demo's fly's with two stability balls....
There are also other upperbody exercises listed that might work for you.

Good luck!

Arm circles, I had completely forgotten about those! Thanks a lot, lorka150. I've been doing them faithfully.

luvs_torun, thanks for the links, those look useful.
