I have severe insulin resistance. I have been injecting 10mcg of Byetta and takin g metformin for 6 months. Does the SBD still work with these medications?
I know that sounds dumb. But I've been on Phase 2 for nearly a week and I still feel, sometimes, like I have the SBD flu all over again. I'm wondering if it is the medications.
Any experiences? Advice? Nuggets of knowledge?
Thanks! |

| Does your doctor know that you're on SBD? I don't take either medication because my IR, although severe, was controllable through diet and exercise. However, I would imagine that you need to adjust your dosages to account for the change in your eating habits, as SBD is designed minimize fluctuations in your blood sugar levels. |

Hi.I am also insulin resistant. Not because of Diabetes, but because I have Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome. I was prescribed Metformin as well. I am supposed to take 4 500mg tabs per day. I say supposed to, because I never remember, or maybe it is because the pills are so huge I don't want to remember to take them. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago. I took metformin at the time and it gave me severe diarhea but I stuck with it because it seemed to help curb my carb cravings. I moved to another state and to make a long story short, I did not have health insurance, and could not afford to take it, so I stopped. I moved back to NY and my doctor advised me to start the metformin again. This time around I had no side effects. Infact, it seemed like I was taking them for no reason. I know I need to take it, and take it regularly to reep the benefits. My doctor(both my OB/GYN & PCP) instructed me to start the South Beach Diet. My OB/GYN told me to get on it and stay on it for the rest of my life.
So, I bought the SBD book and am begining this week. But I do want to tell you about my experience in Dallas with my father. I had never heard of the South Beach Diet. But he and I wanted to lose weight. We walked at a slow-medium pace for 30minutes every night ( every other night for those long days). We only cooked on our George Foreman grill. We had grilled chicken, tuna, talapia and turkey. We ate oven roasted veggies, brown rice, salad (salad was pouring out of our ears), pickles, and I hate to say chips and homeade salsa(daily) and an occasional chocolate snack which was stored in the freezer. I lost 30pounds in 2 months. I had more energy and felt the better than I ever had.
I am not a doctor and cannot give medical advice, but I would assume the metformin should only help you along with the south beach diet. My roomate is diabetic and takes Byetta along with Metformin. He eats what he wants and he although he act like he is full of energy, he has to be near 400lbs.
I am going to start taking my Metformin without skipping doses. I will let you know how it works along with the SBD. |

I also am insulin resistant associated with recently being diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor put my on 2 to 3, 500mg of metformin, told me to do a low-carb diet, and exercise. I had only gotten up to 2 metformin prior to phase 1 and felt so crummy, my doctor said it was ok to go back to just 1 until I felt better. His medical advice though, was that I should be doing all three: metformin, low-carb diet (SB recommened), and exercise. I am starting to feel a little better now that I am starting phase 2 and plan to go back to 2 metformin a day.
It's not quite the same sitsuation, but I hope it helps! You should definitly talk to your doctor! |
