Cracking and splitting fingernails

Hi - I apologize if this is posted elsewhere.

My dad is about 68 and Type 2 diabetic. His fingernails are so brittle, that they are splitting vertically from tip to cuticle, and all the way through to the nailbed.

He's asked his doctors about it, and they've told him it's just "part of getting old."

It's especially worrisome because it's an easy entry point for infections. He's tried over-the-counter topical treatments, fungus treatments, etc., and nothing helps.

Any suggestions?

If they are dry, why not put oil on them every day? My dad puts oil on his nails every day and it probably has the nicest nails I have ever seen man or woman.

Well, my new years resolution(s) was to grow out my nails and diet. And the diet is going very well, and the growing of the nail is going very well, only because I had a friend that recommended that I try this CHEAP Sally's hard as nails product you get from Walmart.

Which was the cure ALL for my cracking and splitting nails. I paint this stuff on my nails every other night and it keeps them nice. If i miss painting them for a week, they will start to become brittle where the polish has come off and the nail is exposed and it will begin to crack. Vertically and every which way.

Sally's hard as nails. Will help keep them healthy and not cracking. But you have to apply it every other day.

Anyone notice that they are having a problem with their nails on P1? I was taking vitamins and my nails were looking great, but for the past 2 weeks that I have been on P1 my nails are cracking, brittle and are splitting. I was hoping they would change back when I move to Ph2.
