| I am considering joining the pilates class, but just wondering what I should expect? has anyone here done anything like that? What kind of results should I expect bodywise? |

Pilates is awesome....
If taught properly (not always the case), you won't believe how hard it is at first. You are using muscles from your core (abs, back) that you've never used before.
It's taken me a year to be able to do some of the more complex moves.
But I have really seen results, not so much in losing weight as in developing strength and flexibility that I never had before. I can now actually do pushups (and not those lady pushups either).
I have had numerous back and shoulder complaints lately and Pilates has cured them all. Wish I had started it years ago and kept it up.
In short, it's one of the best things to add to your repertoire of activities.

I think Pilates is great. I had some private instruction years ago, and I've been to a few classes at my gym. I recently bought some Pilates videos.
The classes at the gym were good, but I didn't think the instructor explained the principles well enough. The breathing is very specific, as well as keeping your belly "scooped". I still got good workouts in at the class, but I think she could have explained more.
The videos I got are OK. It was a set of three, but I really only like the one. Two of them are just too easy, and it's not like I'm in great shape, so it shouldn't be tough to get a good workout. They're by Gaiam, but I wouldn't recommend the set. The one I like out of the three is Cardio Pilates. That one's good. |

Winsor Pilates is nice b/c she explains everything really well [breathing and all that] and I think that's really important.
It can get kind of repetative to hear it over and over though, but I have other videos now - I like them but I always wonder how beginners learn to do them right b/c so many videos just don't explain anything [even though they're called beginner/intermediate]. |

I've tried windsor pilates before. I liked it, I'm just always so unsure if I have the right form, or whatever.
This pilates centre is repuatable, from what I am reading. I could have a choice of 1, 2 or 3 days a week for classes. They have different levels as well, so I could start off as the very beginning. They have the mat classes, but they also have pilates equipment that they have classes for.
I think I might make a drop in, just to check it out! But it works perfectly around my schedule and all, and I think it would be fun!
The one thing I was worried is being in a class with people that are way out of my age group (I'm 20). But, the centre is right across from the college dorms, so I would assume there would be girls my own age. |

I'd start with the mat class. You can do the exercises at home.....
Also take a chance with older people, you might find they have something to offer!

| I'm with older people all the time, I don't know anyone my own age, lol. So just hoping it could be a chance to meet more people. |

| I have the Pilates Reformer with the Rebounder attachment, and I love it. I bought it at QVC during an introductory special, and it is the best thing I have found for stretching and working out all my muscle groups. I can work my arms, legs, shoulders, butt, back, and abs, all in 20 minutes a day! Not to mention the rebounder attachment which allows me to do no impact cardio which is wonderful for my knees. (I have arthritis.) The rebounder is best explained as a trampoline done laying flat on your back. The resistance bands pop you back to the srating position and then you just bounce off with your knees slightly bent. I hurt in places I dodnt know I had, but it is a good burn. I would reccomend Pilates to any age group. |

I HAVE WORKED OUT IN MANY WAYS OVER THE YEARS...AEROBIC CLASSES...CIRCUIT TRAINING WITH A PERSONAL TRAINER, ETC....BUT NOTHING CAME CLOSE TO PILATES. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT REALLY WAS UNTIL I STARTED. I HAVE BEEN ATTENDING PRIVATE SESSIONS AND AFTER EACH SESSION I FEEL AS IF I HAD A FULLY BODY MASSAGE...BUT DON'T BE FOOLED...TO DO PILATES CORRECTLY YOU REALLY HAVE TO WORK...I USUALLY WORK UP SUCH A SWEAT THAT THE DROPLETS POUR OFF MY FACE...BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING I ALWAYS WIPE DOWN THE EQUIPMENT WHEN I AM DONE.
PILATES IS THE BEST...I AM WEARING CLOTHES NOW THAT I WORE WHEN I WAS 10 LBS LIGHTER (NO PILATES THEN). I GUESS I HAVE BUILT MUSCLE BUT I NOTICED THAT I NOW WALK STRAIGHTER, NOT HUNCHED OVER AND I AM CONSCIOUS OF MY POSTURE.
IF YOU HAVE NOT TRIED PILATES...JOIN A CLASS...DO IT! |

I think pilates is an excellent exercise. I try to do some
pilates moves every week for my lower body, it is
great for stengthening.
Marie Winsor has an aerobic pilates tape and I think
this sounds interesting as the floor work is such a
workout.
A class would be good as an instructor can make sure
you are doing it correctly. Core placement and breathing
is very important in pilates. |
