I walk in the cemetery at lunch.

So I constantly see the preperations for funerals. One day I was walking by a spot where they had removed the grass leaving the empty dirt. (A tractor comes and digs the hole closer to the actual funeral.)
It was a perfect picture that I actually had to catch on my cell phone.
Imagine this..

Empty dirt grave spot
Old fashioned 1800's grave about 3 feet behind the spot.
Sitting on top of the gravestone was a vulchure.
When he spread his wings I had to take a picture.

Can we see the picture?

I love trying to photograph strange and beautiful things.

Last year a coyote almost ate my dog! I walk my dog in a semi-wooded area sometimes, and the darn thing came out of the woods and chased us down the sidewalk! Thank goodness a big truck pulled over and honked his horn to scare it away...it was broad daylight too! The stupid thing "trotted" down the sidewalk after me and my poor dog (a little 15 lb. jack Russell terrier!) for probably a quarter of a mile. I tried to shoo it away several times, but it was a persistent little bugger, I'll give him that. It was weird. The truck driver that pulled over said he had never seen anything quite like it.

OK, this happened several years ago. I wasn't exercising at the time, but I ended up running away so fast, I hope you'll allow me to share the story...

It was about 13 years ago. I was a newlywed, eager to please/help my farming husband any way I could. So, when he called me at home and said "Bring dinner to the farm at such-and-such crossroads" I did. Mind you, this was about 15-20 miles out of the way at night (now I make him pack his own lunch and take it with him on the tractor! )

Anyway, I picked up a large Pizza Hut pizza for him to share with the other couple men working. I drove out to the farm where he was driving one of 3 tractors and figured out which one he was in. His tractor was coming up along side of a large barn. There was a pole light in the yard, but that end of the barn was in complete shadows and the night was PITCH black.

I was tired and just wanted to hand him his pizza and go, so I rounded the end of the barn - and ran SMACK DAB into the largest raccoon I've ever seen in my life! This thing was the size of a medium dog and it stood on its back legs and HISSED AT ME, clawing in the air! We were probably only a foot or so apart. Seriously, I could have reached out and touched the thing.

That thing scared me so bad I SCREAMED ...AND THREW THE PIZZA AT IT!

The coon ran one way, I ran the other, and here comes my husband in the tractor. And I, the dutiful new wife, with no pizza.

Well, God must have took pitty with me that night, because the pizza box never opened. It had flipped upside down, but stayed shut. So I grabbed the box, dusted it off, shoved it in the tractor's door and took off for home as fast as I could go.

The next morning my hubby thanked me for the pizza, but told me I should complain to the resturant. "All of the toppings were stuck to the top of the box..."

I have a couple of similar stories:

Most recently, I was walking in my city neighborhood when a squirrel jumped out of the top of a tree and landed right at my feet. He looked up at me for a second and scurried off. I never expected that.

Another time, I had just come back from an evening walk to find three racoons sitting on the rim of my garbage can eating old pizza crust. I couldn't believe their audacity. (At the same time, i was impressed with their ingenuity.)

And once when I was a little girl, my grandmother and I were sitting out in our front yard late on a hot summer night. My grandmother felt fur rub against her leg and she started petting the creature, thinking it was one of our cats. Several minutes later, my dad turned on the light to tell us to come inside, and we discovered that the "cat" was really a skunk. The skunk and my grandma froze, then both took off running. It was a sight to see.

Your story make me think of another one...

My great-grandmother felt very insecure when my great-grandfather wasn't home... So he would brought up a skunk, make its glands removed (skunk don't smell bad if they never used their gland) and train them... So for some time, they had a skunk for pet !

When he was going away, he would leave the skunk on the porch... No one ever dared to come to see my great-grandmother when she was alone ! (I wonder why  )
