Well, since today is an off-day from the gym for me, I decided to go for a nice long walk this evening. I left the house around 8:45, just as the sun was setting for the night. I stuck to a route I have used before in the evenings, around town on streets with street lights. I was about halfway around my route, walking at a good pace. My brain was wandering and my body was more or less in auto-pilot, as it often is during a good walk. Movement on the asphalt in front of me caught my eye. I looked up in time to see a SKUNK looking over his shoulder at me. I did an about-face and sprinted in the opposie direction! Luckily, I did not get sprayed, but my heart was pounding! I looked over my shoulder when I felt I was far enough away to risk it, and there were those glowing little eyes watching me in the distance. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggghhhhhhh.
Anybody else have an unpleasant surprise like mine during a workout?

LOL! I've always been fearful of such a thing.
My experience was back in college. I typically walked or ran on city sidewalks. Well I had found this paved path from one sidewalk that actually cut across to a middle school. One day I was running and thought I'd take the path. I almost got ran over by a deer. I'm sure I scared him/her clomping through his/her woods, but I know a yelp escaped my mouth. Not sure I took that path again.
Thanks for the post (and the giggle). I had forgotten about that deer. |

Many years ago on a state bike trail (Elroy - Sparta for the Wisconsinites), I got stopped dead in my tracks by a Sandhill Crane doing a threat display on the trail right in front of me.
But I think your skunk could have been worse! |

Yikes, OGB! I'm just glad the skunk story turned out to be a funny one and not a stinky one!

i was just telling this story in the runners thread....
ok so i was running on a path a few weeks ago, a path that i have run many a time in the morning, but never in the evening. but i decided to check it out after work one day. at this time i was having some shin pain, so i was trying my best to run in the dirt next to the paved path. i happen to look down at the ground at one point, and there was a SNAKE! i was so close to stepping on it, and i jumped and let out a little scream. there were two guys walking towards me and i think i really freaked them out. i really dont like snakes, and apparently this was the time of day they come out, so the rest of the path was scattered with snakes as well.
i havent run there since. |

Kerri - lucky you didn't get sprayed! That would be nasty! Think I'd avoid that route!
Camping as kids in Northern Wi we set up camp around midnight and then made the last trip to the outhouse. We came upon a skunk going through garbage with his tail up, looking over his shoulder and growling! We all just moved very quickly and quietly! |

| i run by a little pond ... a week or so ago, on a HOT day, someone had left a pile of HUGE nightcrawlers on the sidewalk (apparently after fishing). EW. looked like a huge pile of guts. |

packerprincess - I probably will avoid that route after dark from now on. I would NEVER have expected to run into a skunk just walking down the sidewalk. Nobody had any garbage out...there weren't any trees or bushes or woods around for hiding in...I was only two blocks from the main street in the borough!
The funny thing is, I normally walk a different route during the day. I avoid that route at night, because there is a small corn field on the side of the road that almost always has a strong smell of skunk lingering. I've always been afraid of running into that skunk...and in avoiding it I ended up running into another one over a mile away!
Even funnier, I grew up in a very wooded area, and spent many nights and early morning hours outside from childhood through the present. I NEVER ran into a skunk at home...now I live in a busy borough, and there he is!

I was running with my friends on our trail (we run there everyday for cross country practice) and there was a GIANT snake! I have a huge phobia so I started to breathe really fast and I totally freaked out. Some boys behind us saw the snake and threw a giant rock on it until it was dead.
On the same path I was running and saw a little snake. I closed my eyes and sprinted by. Phew.
I have seen hundreds of deer and once saw a cat with three legs :P |

I am sorry you have a phobia!
Having said that, I think it is disgusting that the boys behind you killed the snake!! The snake was probably more scared and rightly so!
Stick with roads if you don't like wildlife! Sorry to be so blunt but they have as much right to be there if not more! Just leave them be and move on!!! Certainly don't kill them! |

Ditto that lisa. Snakes do a lot of good even though many people are scared of them. The only one's we would kill are the rattlesnakes and only if they're near our house & neighborhood. They are just too dangerous to the kids and animals.
Last week when I was riding my bike I came across a couple large fawns that jumped into the road and ran in front of me for a bit. I was just glad they entered the road well ahead of me and not into me! Very beautiful.
