walking or biking?

i have been walking but was wondering if biking would work more muscles and help me get more lean. just thought i would throw that into the topics?

Here's a website to compare calories burned, you can see the different levels in each kind of activity. Biking at a fairly quick pace will burn more calories, so it will burn "fat " quicker.

Biking will burn more calories and give you both a strength and aerobic work out. You can do that while walking too if you are doing hills and really pushing yourself but overall biking is more strenuous. All exercises are the same that what you get from it depends on what you put into it though!

I would think that because on a bike your weight's supported and you're not using as many muscles then it's not as efficient.

I do a bit of both.

Thanks for posting this question ktty! i have been thinking about biking myself.

Lora, im probably gonna come visit you guys over there and get some advice on purchasing a bike when i decide to do it. :D

Efficient at what? My Dr did recommend a walking program, but he stated 4 miles per hour and that is a fairly brisk pace. For my weight, walking that pace would burn 103 calories for 15 minutes, 410 for an hour. If you bike at a 'leisurely pace' (10-12 mph) you will burn 128 and 513 for the same time periods. Crank it a bit more on the bike and you can easily get to the 14-16mph pace, that will burn 231 for 15 min/923 for an hour.

As others pointed out the more effort you put in, the more calories you are going to burn.

I suppose you could question how efficient one is compared to the other for muscle workout, but for the aerobic part I think biking is far more efficient at burning the fat. And in the end isn't that what most of us are here for?

I'd do both....
Cycling is a great way to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time (if you're doing it right :wink: )..... however it is a non weight bearing activity, which you do need to help build strong bones (especially important if you are a woman).
Also, if you are looking for that "lean" look.... strength training will help tremendously. Neither biking nor walking works the upper-body a whole lot... so throw that in 3 times a week.

Running is good too..... :wink: :D

Very true on the upper body. I'm trying to add core and upper body strength so I can have arms and a back that'll match my awesome legs from biking. I'm amazed at how much difference it's made in my calves already!

I did want to chime in on the pace. I'm not sure I'd call 10-12 leisurely. It depends on your fitness level, terrain, and bike type. I was riding with a group on Sat and they ride about 15mph which is a good tour speed. It wiped me out fast! I had to quit and head back after an hour. Even though I slowed to my comfortable pace of around 11mph I was passing other people. I'm also on a steal frame mountain bike which is heavier than a road or tour bike. The Tour de France guys get up to 40mph in case you were wondering. :shock:

That's why I put my 'leisurely' in quotes. That was from the calorie burned website. I have one of the hybrid bikes, and it is a bit heavier then the road bikes so while I can reach and maintain the 14 to 16 mph, we do a bit of offroad stuff in the parks and that slows us way down.

Key thing is just get out and do something.

thank you all for your advise and i think i will do both as soon as i can find someplace to ride without dogs wanting to eat my legs for a snack LOL , seriosly though, i cannot ride my bike where i walk, no bikes allowed. thank you all
