I had the gastric bypass 2 1/2 years ago, and found that South Beach is EXACTLY how they counsel us to eat!! This has been great for me. It is also a great way to try to lose those last pesky pounds that seem to LOVE clinging onto me.
I was hoping to find others on here as well. We have different issues that come up and it would be great to discuss doing SB after GB!!
Anyone else out there?
 |

Hi Cheri, I had a RNY in May 2001. I gained some weight back, about 40 pounds or so. So this is just like the diet that they gave us. It's kinda like going back to basics for me. Which I wan't doing and that is why I gained weight. Nice to meet you!
Right now i weight 217.5 and I'd like to be 160. I could never get rid of those last few pounds it seemed! |

Hey Meg! Good to see that there are other GB's here. I had someone else send me a private message to let me know she was around also. Do you think that the quick weight loss messed with your metabolism and that is why we have to watch things a bit more closely? In Jan I did SB, moving to P2 adding a grain and 1 piece of fruit and I started gaining weight. I may have to live on P1 for the rest of my life
I don't know. I'm trying it differently this time. I may add 1 thing in maybe 3 times a week and see what happens. Let me know how your experience is on SB.
And what is up with those last few lbs.???
Congrats on being 3 :!: years post-op!! |

My Mother in Law had gastric bypass surgery last July, she has now lost about 140lbs, she said it was the best thing she has ever done.
We have been trying to tget if for my husband, but lots of delays with insurance and such....I want to see how his weight goes on SB, maybe he wont need the surgery!!!!

Nice to meet others that have had this GB thing done...I had a Lap procedure on April 3rd of 2003,I WAS 269...now I am 189! I had hit a bad plateau about 7 months in and it was soooo frustrationg...but I learned after reading and starting the SBD that it was exactly how I was supposed to be eating anyway...duh! The last 15 pounds are from 3 and 1/2 weeks on SBD...and I couldn't do it without this plan! It does work..if you work it...THe GB is "only a tool", as they told us...the rest, you gotta do on your own. We really should start a GB South Beach Chapter support group...we do have special concerns...folks think it's EASIER for us...LOL!! NOT!!!! Anyhow...wanted to touch base and let you know I was around..Any of you that have had this done and are interested in chatting about it, please write if you'd like...

Hi Darlene and Akasha!!
I am soooo glad you guys are here!!!! Yes, SB is how we have been taught to eat after surgery. It makes so much sense. I am so thankful to have found this 'diet'. |

Thanks for educating me. I thought that if you had gastric bypass, you would lose virtually all the weight you need to lose because all you can do is eat enough to sustain yourself.
It never quite dawned on me that one might need to diet years AFTER getting a bypass.
I have seriously considered getting a bypass, but I'm hoping I can lose all the weight I need to without having it done. |

Hi everyone! I do think by following the "rules" it helps to lose/maintain your weight after GB. I know I stopped following them.
Cheri, I do think it messes with our metabolism, but I also know they say the first 18 months is the best time in which we lose weight. Congrats on being 2 1/2 years out! I think the SB diet is the one just like ours.
Darlene, I had to hire a lawyer to get insurance approval. They said I didn't qualify, yet their only qualifications was that you had to be morbidly obese. Um, I was 5'4" and 295. I think I was, lol.
Akasha, I lost to about 175...then stopped. Then I gained, but i know through bad choices of my own. There is a group on Yahoo Groups, but they aren't too chatty...but I just joined. We could make our own however!
I am happy to report that after 4 days on the diet I have lost 3.5 lbs...ok, so it could be water weight, etc etc...but it is a motivator. I think what Cheri plans on doing is smart, adding it in something a few times a week. I miss fruit, darn strawberries here in FL all over the place! (Including in my little garden!)
I'm glad to meet some other people like me!! If anyone ever wants to e-mail me it's meghand@medical-ink.com. |

| SBD is my last diet before I decide to have GB. I hope I wont have to have the surgery, it sorta scares me. Wait, that's the wrong attitude to have!! I found the SBD and now I wont have to have surgery! Right? Right? lol |

It's not the panacea for all your ills..trust me. You have to follow a diet ..even after the operation and it's not easy...There's always side effects to deal with too...those are NEVER planned on. I have problems sometimes with foods not digesting, which will make me throw up for 1-3 days straight...still haven't figured out how to stop it. The operation only does so much...your stomach does HOLD MORE THAN an EGG sized protion...trust that..it stretches a bit. True Iican't hold what I ONCE DID...but it's still enough to not allow me to lose properly. This is a great diet for those that have had it..or are considering it..becasue you'll have to eat like this anyway afterwards..once you heal up that is. I hope this helps..Cheri..I'm here for ya babe...email me anytime...any of you for that matter.

| Man I am glad I found a group of people! Tom, it is a way of life, but like they say it is a tool. The eating plan goes with it. If you can do it with SBD, great! It is hard, I had problems with throwing up too...not to be gross, but it was every few days. Like something got stuck and wouldn't go away until I threw up. It hasn't been easy, but I wouldn't change it! |

What frustrates me is that I have been eating healthy since the surgery, yet didn't make it to goal. Before surgery, I craved and could devour fatty foods, like fried foods and McD's, now those things are repulsive to me. And the sugar thing. Can't do it. Get sick. Which is fine with me, because it certainly has been the deterrant. So, why is it that I crave fruits and veggies, and eat healthy, but cannot take off the weight? That is why I thought it may have something to do with my metabolism.
Side note: I saw a plastic surgeon today for my tummy. He says he'll do it when I take off 10 lbs. Said that he would do it at this weight, but I would be happier if I lost a little more. Hitten' the beach HARD!!

| I think those last few pounds might be why I turned around and ate wrong...excuse I know, but it was so frustrating! Cheri, if you get your tummy done, don't be scared when you first get on the scale and you weigh more! I had my tummy done in Dec 02 and then my boobs done May 03. After the tummy, I weighed 12 pounds more than what I was before surgery, it took a bit to come off too. After the boobs I weighed 8 pounds more. It came off, but it took longer. The tummy really wasn't so bad. To this day, it is tight, even with weight gain. |

| I had GB in Feb 2000 and lost 242 lbs. I had a baby and gained 60lbs. Now I'm in the process of losing it to get back to where I started. Hope to see you all online and a support group with this diet among GB'ers would be super! |
