Promise to start running again.

Way back, 3 years ago, when I weighed 265 plus, I promised myself that I would start jogging again if my weight dropped below 200 pounds. I cannot believe what has happened in the past 3 years. I went from solo exercising with free weights and elliptical trainer to doing BodyPump 3 times weekly. Nine months ago BodyStep was not enough so I added BodyStep twice a week and a BodyFlow. Two months ago that was not enough so I added BodyCombat 2 to 3 times a week.

Now I am down to 204 to 205 pounds so I am planning on how to add running to my workout. After I break the 200 pound point, what I am considering is to modify the 1 to 2 mile walk I do before the Body??? classes to a half walk / half jog with each jog leg starting at a quarter mile. If this works out, start increasing it by a 1/12 of a mile, 1 lap, weekly. I have this dream of running in some of these 5K fun runs like I did 15 years ago.

Does this seem reasonable?

Starting out I think more in time goals than distance goals.

How about...

Walk 5 min
Run 1 min

Repeating a few times to start.

Since you are in great cardiovascular shape it will likely be all about your shins, your soles, your gut, your quads, and maybe your hamstrings.

It'll take time for the running-specific elements to 'catch up' with your heart and lungs and that.

Maybe I'd start out 2 days a week too.

incrementally, depending upon how each of the parts are feeling and being patient for whatever the weakest link at the moment is, you can bump up the ratio and add days and increase time bit by bit.

Don't know I'd I'd advocate the 'weekly' expectations yet. Give it a few weeks just trying some initial steps.

And at smaller time increments between run and walk than what you outline.

Once in a running stride, it can be psychologically difficult to transition to a walking gait. It can feel like an admission that one is 'out of shape' and 'can't' go any further. That one is a wimp or something.

This is far from the case.

Year to date, I personally have run around 600 some miles bit I have also walked almost 100. I often start out walking, insert walk breaks into runs, and cool down with walking too.

While I may be fast, I'm not macho. And somehow, I'm just fine with that.
