Does anyone know if its normal for your hands to swell when walking?

if so, is there anything i can do to prevent it?

if its not normal, what causes it and should i be worried?

i noticed my hands starting to swell yesterday for the first time and then today they swole up so bad i couldnt make a fist. It is now an hour and a half since my walk and i can make a fist, but still cannot take off my wedding ring.

I appreciate any input you guys might have. :D

This has happened to me in the past. I googled it - sounds like it's pretty normal, but no one really knows why it happens:

Hope this helps!

One piece of advice that I have received is to carry something small in your hands (your ipod or chapstick would work). It's the act of gripping something that helps reduce the swelling.

Squeeze your hands around whatever you are carrying every once in a while too. That seems to help, now that I think about it, you need to keep the blood flowing.

Could be the heat & the humidity too.

My shoulders get really stiff when I walk or jog...

So I swing my arms in huge circles every once in a while. I mean like I'm about to wind up for a major league pitch. Helps to get the blood flowing to my hands too. I also flex my fingers/fists every now and then.

I probably look pretty stupid from afar, but whatever works... right?

Sometimes mine swell so much that they're actually painful.

It helps if I occasionally raise them up over my head and open and close my fists a few times, wiggle my fingers, etc. Or, if I walk with my arms bent at 90 degrees rather than hanging at my sides it also seems to help.

As i mentioned to Scarlett, i tried doing that too....didnt help. Mine get real uncomfortable and verge on being painful, i think because the skin gets so tight. I think its possible i didnt start moving arms/fingers soon enough. I think maybe i waited until the swelling was out of control. Probably too late then to try to stop it  .

Thanks for posting Paula...I appreciate it!

Take care :D

Dee, then I would try holding my arms with my elbows bent at 90 degrees. It feels strange at first, but after a while it feels more natural. At least that way, you don't have gravity working against you.

Dee -
I googled this, and it seems to be a very common occurrance. All of the suggestions above were also recommended in the articles I found.

Also recommened... make sure that you are well hydrated. Some of the articles suggested electrolyte drinks, but to be careful not to get too much and upset the balance the other direction. (Although, I personally would rather drink water than sodium & sugar filled sports drinks).

Does the swelling go down after your walks? If it lasts more than a few hours after you've finished, I would think you should see a doctor. But otherwise... sounds like it happens to a lot of us, and is pretty normal.

Thanks for the advice Scarlett!

It actually took about 3 hours for the swelling to go down totally.

Today it is a lot cooler and less humid out and i will be carrying something in my hands...so i will see how it goes.

Thanks again!

Take care :D

i get that sometimes ... possibly related to salt intake, too?

FYI, there's a bottled water called smartwater that's electrolyte-enhanced. i only know this because it's been cheap at the store so i've bought it a few times since it's cheaper than generic brands these days!

I've seen that water A-rod. I have been wondering if maybe i should drink some Gatorade or something like it.

I've been doing the treadmill this week instead of walking outside and i havent had the hand-swelling problem. But i also have been holding my arms bent at the elbows at a 90-degree angle and swinging them, because i go alot faster on the treadmill then when i walk. So, who knows?.........

Thanks for the info A! :D
