I thought I would start a thread for all of us "walkers" out there. This can be a place for all the novices and old pros out there to get together and compare notes or just relate to one another.
I just started walking a little over 2 weeks ago and would really value any tips, advice or knowledge I could get from those of you have been doing this longer than me.
I would like to see this thread become a real support network for all walkers, old and young alike.
Please stop in and say Hi! |

Hey Dee! 'Fraid I don't have a lot of advice for you on walking as exercise other than to keep it up. You're doing great! I just wanted to be the first to post on your thread.
My doggies would like to chime in and tell you they like to walk leisurely with lots of stops to smell stuff. Probably not the best exercise but lots of fun for them anyhow.

ok...i wil ask the first question;
does anyone know if its normal for your hands to swell when walking?
if so, is there anything i can do to prevent it?
if its not normal, what causes it and should i be worried?
i noticed my hands starting to swell yesterday for the first time and then today they swole up so bad i couldnt make a fist. It is now an hour and a half since my walk and i can make a fist, but still cannot take off my wedding ring.
I'm going to post this in the medical thread as well, just in case. |

Hi Dee
I am a walker--I do alot of power waling--I started about 6 months ago.
My hands swell and the only thing that works for me is making sure I drink TONS of water before and after.

Good morning walkers! :D
I was wondering if anyone is walking in this stifling heat and if you have any tips on the best way to keep cool?
For me, i soak down a towel before i leave and put it around my neck, across my shoulders. It keeps me cool and i can also use to wipe down face and arms and legs to help cool down also.
And of course, i carry a 22 oz bottle of ice/water combo.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day and please try to stay cool out there! :D |

How hot has it been there? I've been trying to get up early and bike since it gets very hot during the day here. It will be nice when dd gets back and I won't have to get up before dh goes to work. I know you go to work early so that's not an option for you. :? Make sure you carry water with you and drink lots!

Hey Lora!
Up until today, its been in the mid to high ninties with yucky humidity.
Today it is only supposed to be in the eighties and humidity is way down. Personally i cant wait to get out there today.
You're right. I wish i could go early in the morning. But instead i just wait until the evening between 6 and 7. Then i try to find the route with most shade. AND i do take lots of water.
You know, i see people all the time walking (and running) without water on them. How do they do that? I am not about to try to walk anywhere without a supply of water with me! |

| Hi there! My hands also swell up terribly especially when it is hot/warm out. I found when i keep my hands elevated that is helpful (like when I am on a backpacking trip I hold onto the straps - I guess if you are just walking around the neighborhood that would look a little weird w.out a backpack! ) I agree w. the water too. I'll have to check out the medical board...thanks for posting this! |

Running, I'm usually OK up to about 6 miles without rehydrating. Usually just drink a little before and a good amount after.
Seven miles and up I usually run with my Fuel Belt. However, some people just plan routes out based upon water fountains and that. But also some runners even "plant" water bottles on their route in advance of the run.
BTW, in addition to being a runner, I would consider myself a walker too. |

Good morning Papa!
Thats really cool information about the water "planting". I never knew that. :o
I wear a waist pack, the kind that has a water bottle with it. I tend to overheat very easily if i dont drink water, so i don't want to take any chances. There is one route (the main one) that i take where there areseveral water fountains in the middle of the route (its a ballfield and park area). But those are a last resort for me because our city water tastes like crap and it's kinda warm.
Thanks for visiting this thread Papa! And thanks for the info..it was great!
Have a great day and come back anytime! :D |

| i just started walking again, i walk at least 3 miles a day, but i walk at 5am, about 2 or 3 and if i do not get all three i will go back at 7 or 8 and finish and sometimes walk an extra 1 or 2 sometimes i get up to 5 miles a day on occasion .but my goal is to do 5 in morning and 5 at night. but good luck to all the walkers. and another suggestion would be to walk with a buddy or two anad you will be so into the conversation that the heat will be second to the company! good luck |

Hello fellow walkers!!
I started walking mid June for the first time in my life. I started with just a meandering walk around the cemetery across from my work. That turned into a mile which is now a mile and a half Monday through Friday during my lunch.
I can make it in about 30-40 minutes.
This is amazing considering I haven't exercised ever. EVER.
I love my walks now. I am beginning to see results in my legs. It is very motivating.
The cemetery workers are beginning to wave and drive along side of me to say hello so I feel safe.
I can't wait for those saddle bags to disappear :) |
