i have been watching my caloric intake as well(thank you Sparkpeople)...averaging 1600 calories a day...i think that has made a huge difference as well...

BTW...does anyone know if 1600 cals a day is enough for me, since i am walking? Here's my walking schedule in a month's time:

Week 1: 5 days/60-90 min per day
Week 2: 3 days/60-90 min per day
Week 3: 5 days/60-90 min per day
Week 4: 3 days/60-90 min per day

I posted this in my journal a few days ago, but didn't get an answer. I thought i would repost it here in the hopes of getting an answer from an experienced athlete/nutritionist...someone qualified....

Thanks to everyone that has stopped in to say hi and share your story and advice. I hope we can continue this for a long time. This would also be a good place to share any funny (or serious) "walking" stories.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day! :D

I don't count calories. If I had to count I don't think I would have stuck with this way of life. So I am sorry I can't answer the question :(

I started walking mid June for the first time in my life. I started with just a meandering walk around the cemetery across from my work. That turned into a mile which is now a mile and a half Monday through Friday during my lunch.
I can make it in about 30-40 minutes.
This is amazing considering I haven't exercised ever. EVER.
I love my walks now. I am beginning to see results in my legs. It is very motivating.
The cemetery workers are beginning to wave and drive along side of me to say hello so I feel safe.
I can't wait for those saddle bags to disappear :)

Hi hl!!

WTG on those daily walks...that is great!!

You are right about seeing results being motivational. And like you, i have fallen in love with walking. I found a route that is off the main roads so that i can hear the birds sing and its peaceful and quiet...no traffic rushing by and guys making lewd comments. It has really become a time for me, myself and I.

But of course, i guess a cemetary can be pretty peaceful and quiet too   .

Thats ok HL! :D

I just started counting calories about 3 weeks ago. It started out as me just keeping a food journal on Sparkpeople and then i started to wonder what my calories intake looked like. I found its an easy way for me to see where i am eating too much or too little of something. I dont think im going to do it forever. Im just doing it now until i get a good idea of what and how i should be eating.

I asked the above question because i know that once you start excersizing you should make sure you are taking in enough calories, because if not you start to burn muscle instead of fat.

dgurba, I don't know how to calculate calories for a person, but SparkPeople has calculators that tell you your goal range, depending on your height, weight, sex and activity level. :)

went walking yesterday 2 miles in the morning and 2 in the rain in the evening. and then i came home and ate a grilled chicken on lettuce leaf adn picante sauce. then i thought ok i am goingto have a suger free pudding 60 calories. then while i was getting one out of the box, another one fell with it on the floor. they both busted open , so instead of putting one back in fridge , i ate both of them . oh my goodness i felt so guilty, even while i was eating the second one i could here my inner SB telling me what are you doing. so now i am going to have to walk extra tonight cause i slept in this morning. anyway just thought i would spill. well no more of that. do not know why i did it anyways, i did not even want the second one . hope everyone had a better day.

Hi City Girl!

Yea, i already use Sparkpeople....love them! They have my calorie range at 1375-1700. That seemed kinda low to me....and i wasnt thinking that they were calculating that in because that was the range before i even entered any info about my walking.

Thanks CG! :D

Hi ktty!

Great job on the walk...and in the rain too?!...WTG!!

As for the pudding...we have all been there, done that my friend. Dont beat yourself up too hard....you will walk it off and keep right on truckin'...no big deal :D . The big deal would be if you felt so guilty that you just gave up...but you're not and that's the most important thing.

Have a great day! :D

 I walked at lunch today! Can I join you! I also will walk the Grandbaby when I get home -- if its not raining!! I work in my yard in the rain -- but I don't want the little guy to catch pneumonia.

I usually try to walk in the basement on really hot, muggy days. We are between classes now so not many students are in the hallways. On really nice days -- I'll venture out and around the bldgs. I also try to use the stairs more often than not!

I also use sparkpeople (TxGrandmom). I like the nutrition tracker there a lot. I've been able to streamline my calories and make better choices!

What a great thread for one of my favorite exercise walking.

Walking is the best exercise because I find so much can be
done with it. I walk with my dogs and they do stop but I
do standing leg raises whle they do their business - this
keeps my intensity up and tones my legs.

To increase upper body intensity I do arm circles and other
arm movements while walking. (No one stares when I do
this or if they do I don't notice).

And I started last week to do a sort of shuffle jog for 10 steps
then a power stride for 10 steps. Maybe this leads to running
eventually.

Someone mentioned 1600 calories for a lot of daily walking.
I would test that and see how hungry you are. I would give
myself leeway to add a couple hundred more. Or maybe
just start at 1800 and see how that plays out and you can
always adjust from that.

Great tips here for the walking in the heat - I go very early
in summers here in Texas. Maybe a water/energy/power belt
is in order. I will have to check one of those things out. I have
been leaving my water in the car for me and my dogs.

Next goal I have is to go on a weekend hike of a few hours.
That would be great. When in a beautiful park with all the
green scenery and sunshine I find the walk just flys by.

Even though
I have already walked today, just writing about it has got me
wanting to go back out again!
