This diet/book has some excellent recipes and points people in the right direction for healthy eating in general, and will likely result in weight loss (due to reduced caloric intake) - the premise on which the book is founded however, may well be false according to the scientists at Tufts University. See the May, 2004 Tufts University Nutrition Newsletter for a scientific review of this diet: http://healthletter.tufts.edu/issues/2004-05/southbeach.html or go to www.Tufts.org and search their site for the South Beach Diet. Here is an excerpt from the Tufts review:
"The premise of the book is that many foods high in carbohydrates send blood sugar soaring too high too fast, which then gets the hormone insulin in gear to take sugar out of the bloodstream. But the insulin overshoots its mark, causing blood sugar to plunge and leading to reactive hypoglycemia, which in turn produces feelings of incredible hunger and cravings for more carbs that keep the vicious cycle going...There’s just one problem. Unless you have diabetes, blood sugar remains in a remarkably stable range. Yes, it may drop lower after eating a hot fudge sundae than after eating a salmon steak on a bed of lettuce. But, points out Christine L. Pelkman, PhD, who studies blood sugar responses to carbohydrate at the State University of New York at Buffalo, research that has looked at this issue simply has not linked relatively low blood sugar to hunger. “At most,” she says, “it’s a minor player in the hunger/satiety mechanism, with many other hormones and bodily reactions coming into play.”
More information regarding the book and some confusing inconsistencies in it can be found in the full review at www.Tufts.org |

Healthy Eater, you posted exactly the same message a few minutes earlier on SBD Message Board:
http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8008&sid=f08c918c02ad6ea16bbfe9b92a4bc0d1
I'm a little confused. Were you wanting two different kinds of discussions/responses? Was this one supposed to be related to your own results/experience and the other related to SBD in general? Or were you just posting twice? Please let us know what you had in mind. (There's already a discussion on the other board.) Thanks - |

| I read the link. One thing stessed in it is that the initail weight loss is water weight. Well duh! ANY weight loss plan, whether it be a "fad" diet or your own made up one starts out the first week of water loss. Peope have lost 20, 30. 40. even 100 lbs on this diet plan and I HIGHLY doubt that was ALL water! Like I said before, it works for me...and this is the one and ONLY diet I have ever been on (and I've tried a ton) that I can sit here and say I can make this a life time commitment and not have to worry about missing out on anything. High 5 to Dr. A...without him, I'd still be yo-yoing! |

I'm a little surprised at the defensive tone of some of these replies. I like to have as much info as possible on any diet I may be following. I would think this information would be welcomed here, not criticized. It doesn't strike me that posting this makes Healthy Eater a "troll."
Tufts is a qualified source. Why would anyone be turned off by scientific info about this diet? In the end you make the best informed choices for yourself - but isn't having all information (good and bad) what makes your decision "informed"? |

| I'm with Ducky, if it works, why mess with it. I just started and have dropped 5 pounds in a week. I do notice however a little less energy (especilally when I workout) but I think my body is simply adjusting... |

I read the link. But Healthy Eater didn't write the report.
And I don't think he meant to deflate anyone's balloon or try to put down the diet. And whether it is a positive or negative review, I still think it was done in the spirit of sharing SBD-related info. |

This thread started as a duplicate post, meaning that exactly the same post is being discussed on two boards. It would be helpful to look at the discussion on the other board where it was also posted:
http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8008
There's another post about a different scientific review of SBD that you may want to look at also:
