I ended up seeing a podiatrist for mine. A month of meds to give it a chance to heal, along with inserts for shoes and continued wearing of shoes with good support (most of the time) took care of mine for the most part. This was back before I lost weight and started exercising, so that was of no concern at the time.

I had it and went to see a specialists, he said to try the expensive insoles from the drug store and come back in a month. He was ready to fit me with the custom made ones and I said, nope not a problem! I was also told to keep replacing my shoes regularly, buy shoes only with good arch support and replace every six months or so (New Balance is a good brand). I would replace when my toes started to hurt again. I find if I stand on the hard tile floors barefoot for too long it will act up.

I have lost about 40 lbs and it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. I wear flip flops with no pain - most times! Still try to wear good shoes, that is the key! Also, to help with the pain - get a nice cold can of soda and roll your foot over it, that did seem to help! They can give you shots in the area to help, but I didn't opt for that! Ouch!

Keep trying to lose weight and do what you can for exercise.

I'm now taking all sorts of these steps here.

Here's what worked for my plantar fasciitis, and I think that ALL of this made a difference:

1) Got custom orthotics.

2) Got expensive shoes - MBT's, from Foot Solutions. (I don't know if that's a national chain or just here in Colorado.) They cost an absurd amount of money, but they're worth every penny.

3) Got a foot splint thingy to wear at night while sleeping.

4) Iced my foot every night for several months.

5) Lost some weight. (Thanks to SBD!)

6) Got the book "Pain Free" by Pete Escogue, and did the series of foot exercises (about 15 minutes worth) every day for several months. These exercises are AMAZING, and after everything else I did, they were the last piece of the puzzle. Once I started doing these, my foot was almost completely better within a month.

I played a lot of soccer, which meant a lot of running mileage. The best ways to treat p f are to decrease your mileage until it goes away, stretch your calves daily and before any exercise and to get arch supports. After a few months it should go away...best of luck.
ps it may come back once in a while and you just need to decrease your mileage for a while again (the more gradually you build up the better for your arches)
