okay, so i've suffered from plantar fasciitis for over 4 years now. It makes it very difficult to exercise. I definitely can't do any aerobic exercise...anything that makes me jump around is way too painful. any suggestions other than walking???

I developed a plantar fasciitis last year due to too much running. Went to an orthopedist and got inlays for my shoes. As long as I consistently use those while running I'm fine.
Other aerobic activities besides walking/jogging would be: swimming (very highly recommended), nordic walking, inline skating, ice skating, cross country skiing, biking, tread mill, rowing, low impact step aerobic...

i had a very bad case of that. I could barely walk.

I had a slip and fall one day on the ice and I tore the muscle that causes the pain.

i lived in a boot for 2 weeks that held the foot in the proper postion and the thing healed properly. I do not know that i ever would have considered surgery to repair it but NOW knowing that i've had (knock wood) no pain since the injury (which created a natural surgical situation) I would recommend that you might consider it.

what treatment options have you discussed with your doctor.

btw options for exercise
biking
swimming
yoga

Jabbah, I got mine from WALKING and when I had it I could not walk without pain.

As mentioned, swap swimming or bicycling for walking or jogging. You'll likely be able to return to your regular activities as heel pain gradually improves or disappears. However, some people find that the only way to avoid a recurring problem is to permanently modify their aerobic activities.

In addition to orthotics (or inserts) icing it after you exercise for 15-20 minutes is a good idea. Also, gentle stretching of the area.
A good exercise is to apply pressure to your heel by rolling a golf ball or tennis ball with the arch of your foot while you are standing and stabilized. This can help reduce pain and increase blood flow.

Have you seen a podiatrist?
Four years is a long time to put up with pain..........

thanx for the suggestions! :)

I wear inserts, but still have extreme pain after walking for too long. Walking is much better than aerobics on my foot, though. I've kind-of grown accustomed to the pain. I limp around a lot, though, becuz I can't put pressure on it sometimes. And, when it's really bad, I take some pain meds to help, too.

I think I need to try that ball trick....although I must admit it sounds painful!

is this a cure or merely a pain remedy?

So far just a pain remedy. I've been dealing with plantar fasciitis here a month or more myself. I need to get one of those boot things. Does Walgreen's have them?

About 5 years ago I had plantar fasciitis. I kept running.... and for some "strange" reason.... it just wouldn't heal (duh! )
So I did stop and took up cycling for a summer instead. It did finally go away.
I wore these http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/PRO004/ around the house to help support my arch (you can also use them in a shoe). They also helped with the pain.

(Just a thought).......

need to get some of those arch supports...maybe that would help, too.

Swimming, swimming. going swimming trim extra fat from whole your body and relax with water. :D

I don't think you'd need the inserts in addtion to these.
However, you could always try them if you felt you needed more support in your shoe.

Have you considered new shoes?

I had a severe case of it a year or so ago and tried heel supports (helped some) arch supports (uncomfortable), stretching and strengthening (google for exercises). Had to give up walking and running for awhile. When it finally healed, I bought a completely different brand of shoe and knock on wood it seems to have worked
