Hi everyone!

My dd is turning 16 (end of July) and wants a BIG party. At first, she wanted it at a local laser tag place but changed her mind because of the number of kids she wants to invite. We decided with a large number of kids, she should have her party at home (we have a pool and an area for a bonfire). The reason she resisted that idea at first is that she's had LOTS of pool parties in the past and wanted something different.

Any GREAT ideas for a #16 birthday to make it really fun for her and her friends??? I'm looking for inexpensive ideas  .

Thanks,

Anne

Gosh, reminds me of mtv's Sweet 16 party. Those are spoiled kids though.

You can do paintball do it yourself kind, maybe hire a dj and have dancing. How about camping?

I don't know if she is into retro things, but I think an 80s themed party would be really fun.

Have all the guests come in 80s garb, play 80s music, have on some 80s classic movies (16 Candles, Breakfast Club). Play 80s trivia and give away some 80s gifts - banana clips, blue eyeshadow, you get the idea.

That's my idea at least! Have fun!

Thanks! Some great ideas!

I spent the afternoon looking over ideas online and found a few different categories of ideas to maybe get her started thinking (she's saying she doesn't think she wants a party now as having another pool party is too boring  ). Since her friends are all having expensive, fancy parties, I can kind of see her point.

Anyway, I sent her info on several different kinds: survivor parties, amazing race parties, capture the flag (she LOVES that game), a mall scavenger hunt, murder mystery, garage dance party, and some different ideas of things to do at a pool party including this:

Quote: after everyone started to arrive I gathered the girls in my room and brought my little secret to the girls, small supersoakers fully loaded and water balloons that were so full they almost popped in your hands. Before proceeding out side we blind folded the guys with scraps of material, then after we lined them up we told them to take the blind folds off as soon as they did we all let them have it. I bet she goes for that idea!!! :D

She's out of town with a friend right now, so I can't wait to see what she thinks of these ideas!

Thanks again,

Anne

Do you guys have one of those boats you can rent out on a river that do murder mysteries?? That would be fun. Yeah, I watch that MTV Sweet 16 and those parties are sooooooo expensive and over the top. Good Luck!

Hi Anne,
For my daughters 16th we had a "mocktail party" I had lots of horderves on platters, and I bought martini glasses from the dollar store. We created a non alcoholic cocktail for the b-day girl!( lemonade, sprite, splash of grenadine and a cherry)... a Meaghan sunrise... my husband served them on a tray to milling guests...we had a chocolate fountain, and lots of fruit and pretzels for dipping. It was a pool/sleepover and they had lots of fun. Our 15yr old recently had a film festival party.(but it would work well for 16 yr too) I divided the guests into two groups and gave them each a bag filled with misc. items and video camera. Each group had an hour to create their own movie, and it had to include: the items in the bag, everyone in the group, and the phrase " Oh my goodness that is sooo hot" they had a blast and were so creative. One turned out to be murder mystery, and the other a love story(both were hilarious) Afterwards we had popcorn and watched the movies and then gave out awards for best....whatever, everyone got an award for something... The party store had inexpensive movie themed everything... from napkins to confetti... the dollar store had little "academy award trophy's" that we put into cellobags filled with lipgloss, candy etc... as awards....
Hope some of this helps!! :D

themed parties are usually pretty fun if her friends are the type that would be relaxed enough to get into it.

if she's turning 16, she was born in 1991? you could do a 1991-themed party [people lump the early 90s in unfairly with the 80s, but there was a lot of early-90s goodness - hammer pants, ray-ban sunglasses, technicolor shirts, simpsons mania, snap bracelets, and so on]. you could make some really funny trivia games [think shows like "saved by the bell" and "fresh prince" that kids still watch], etc.

you could rent a karaoke set and do old songs like that [do these kids even KNOW that stuff? seems second nature to me, but then again, i'm in my 20s].

or, the mocktail party is a great idea - you could do a 50s/60s theme and kids could dress up.

My kids were really into re-enactments and history so my dd wanted a history themed party. we invited the guest and told them to dress in whatever time period they enjoyed most. we had some midevil (sp? i know it's wrong) and some revolutionary and trade error and some civil war and some 60's. we had bag pipers there and music and dancing from a lot of time errors the kids all had fun and of course we served lots of food. dd dressed in a civil war ball gown and loved it.

don't know if you have time for that now.

What a neat idea A-Rod. I'm going to remember that for when my girl's get older. But, right now we're still in the Chucke Cheese phase :?

Theme party!!!! Wild West, Broadway, 80s, 60s, 50s, Roaring 20s, Surf's Up, GI Joe (Army theme), etc.

In lieu of gifts, TB asked each kid to bring a bag of dry cat or dog food and other pet supplies (collars, leashes, kitty litter, etc), and they donated all of it to the local humane society shelter.

I like fun mixed with altruism!

Thanks for all your great ideas!!!! Sadly, dd1 decided she didn't want a party...she wants to go to King's Island instead with a friend. I've decided she's still getting a party...just a girls' only surprise party Friday night. I think she'll be happy we did it.

I will definitely use your suggestions for dd2. She will LOVE your ideas--no doubt!! She's a party girl!
