For the first time in my life I have started a exercise program of walking. I started over 2 weeks ago. I walk either a mile a day or a mile and a half per day depending on heat or TOM. I walk 5 days a week on my lunch hour at work.
1. Besides my rear and legs will anything else on my body firm up with walking?
2. I have been walking at the rate of a mile and a half in a little over 1/2 hour. Is that a good rate?
I guess I am hoping that walking will get my body fit and I won't have to go all out with exercises like sit ups and crunches. Because with the effort that it takes right now to do the walking I think I might fail if I have to do the others. I intend to walk farther as time goes on and I build up steam and muscles. |

| I would like to know the answer to this too. I started walking today with DH. We walked for 1.5 miles. I plan on doing this 5 days a week, with Saturday and Sundays off. i would like to get up to 3 miles a day. I know it takes time because I was exhausted after 1.5 miles. GL to you, we could be virtual walking buddies :) |

sounds good to me. I walk on my lunch hour at work because that seems to be the only me time I have to do it. I have a huge cemetery across the street from my work and it is like walking in a park.
There are tons of different paths so I figure I won't get bored. Some times I even walk and read my book lol |

Hey, starting out with the regular walking is a FANTASTIC idea!
There will definitley be great results from keeping up with this exercise program! It may take a few weeks to start noticing them though, so give it time, keep it up, and you'll see the benefits.
Also, keeping it up will make it into a habit. So just focus on the walking.
Once you really have made it a habit (after a month or two or so) and you start seeing what sort of results you're getting, then you may decide you want to add in some crunches or weight machines or something to get more varied exercise - BUT for now, focus on the walking!
When I started SB originally, I just couldn't deal with the thought of exercising at all - I totally hated it. A few months ago though, I started going to the gym a couple times a week, and I'd do some weights or the elliptical... got into that habit. Then a few weeks later I found the Couch-to-5K running program, and started doing that.... and a couple weeks after that I started getting into crunches and pushups. And then just a couple weeks ago I started yoga!
The point is, all this variety has been AWESOME and I've really noticed huge changes in my body. HOWEVER, the thought of jumping into ALL of this all at once would have been impossible at first - too overwhelming, and I would have been likely to just give up on everything.
By just starting with ONE type of exercise, however, and allowing my body to really get into it before trying to convince myself to add on something else, however, has really allowed me to mentally "prepare for" and accept this new level of activity.
So for now I'd say DO this walking program and really commit to doing it regularly. Don't worry yourself about any other type of exercise and just get yourself doing the walking. Get your body used to walking and where you feel like it's the routine, not just an extra chore :)
Then in a couple months, evaluate your progress and see if you feel READY to add in another activity. But don't rush yourself, or you may just feel frustrated and overwhelmed and give up on everything. I know I would have done that :)
Good luck, and keep it up!! |

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who walks and reads at the same time. Boy do I get some weird looks though!
I love walking to, try a course with lots of hills, it gives you a better workout. |

I do get odd looks lol.
I currently walk in a cemetery. I alternate my walk to either include the big hill, a portion of the hill or all flat depending on the heat.
I figured it out. I have been walking 7.5 miles a week  I use to just sit in my car and eat and read now I walk and read.
I look forward to my walk which is weird. But great. |
