I couldn't help myself. I was at the gym today, standing on my treadmill, ready to get started. I almost couldn't bring myself to do it, because I had the worst urge to laugh out loud at the woman next to me. I know this sounds terrible, and before I continue let me say clearly and honestly that I do not claim to do ANYTHING at the gym with any great grace or beauty. But this just looked silly.
This woman (a younger woman, probably upper 20's) was running on the treadmill next to me. She had the body I wished for when I was sixteen (and wouldn't even dare dream of now)...very thin, but in a healthy way. She was in a full sprint, but she was hunched forward literally CLINGING to the front of the machine. She looked like she was going to fly off the machine at any moment (one of my own greatest fears).
Another disclaimer - this post is meant no disrespect to people who like to walk and hold on to the handlebars - I do that too! What this woman was doing just looked so unnatural and uncomfortable. And to make matters worse, she ran like this for 90 MINUTES!!!
So my real reason for the post is to ask this question - is this actually a legitimate way to run? Should I feel bad for laughing inside? Could she not have been more productive by running the same speed, with a natural arm movement, for a shorter period of time? Or am I completely wrong, and running for my life while clinging to the treadmill will indeed achieve the dream body? I'm new to this running stuff, so I'm honestly curious.
Thanks!

I would agree with you...that seems very unnatural...and painful!! They say you are supposed to run upright on the elliptical with correct form, so i would think that the same would hold true for the treadmill....
wow.. it shouldnt be that crucial to run hunched over like that... as they say on TBS...THATS FUNNY! :D |

in all seriousness I can't understand these folks that delude themselves into thinking they are getting a workout when they LEAN on their arms and take all the weight off their legs... |

i guess one of the reasons i hate the gym is because i wonder what folks think about the old fat sweaty chick pretending she knows what she's doing in a sea of young healthy bodies.
it's the same with walking... people laugh at you... even if you can't see it... |

Honest to G-d I've never seen an overweight person exercising and thought it was something to make fun of -- maybe when I was twelve. The overweight person with a cart full of junk food? That's another story. I have no mercy for that. |

Oh, Nessa, lots of people are not only not laughing at you, they either don't really notice, or they are, like me, admiring you for getting healthier.
When I first came to this forum I was like luvstorun, a bit heavier than I like but still relatively fit. It's easy for people like me to exercise on the streets or at the gym. It's not easy for those who are unfit or overweight and I recognize that and am impressed when I see it. |

Here is a recent revelation of mine. I ws a mamber of Gold's gym, and got tired of that. Plus, driving across town was a drag just to get tired and drive back home. So I found out that the church down the road from where I just moved has a gym and a NICE workout room!! Luckilly, the woman I work with said she would sponsor me to start going so I can go for FREE!!!! I don't know if this is a nationwide trend or not. Down here in the bible belt the latest craze is to build thest gigantic compounds with gymnaseums and life centers and coffee shops,... I call 'em Six Flags over Jesus.
Are these hapening everywhere? And if so, look into them!! |

I've never seen people made fun of at the gym due to their size. Other reasons maybe, but not size.
Honestly, we are the center of our own universes, but seldom anybody else's. They would rarely even remember us an hour later.
Well, except for me, of course. |
