Ok. Since mid December of 2006 I have joined a gym. At the same time I have been working with a Personal Trainer. I have indeed lost inches and am toning up but am not losing any weight! In 6 months, not 1 lbs..in fact I have gained a lb or two.
This I don't understand because I am working out about 8 hours a week doing all kinds of exercise (more than I have ever done) such as running, squats, lunges, sprints, and weight lifting..
Here is my schedule:
M: 1 hour of PT and then an aerobic step class
T: 1 hour of PT
W: 1 hour of PT and an boot camp type class
TH: usually off but have the option of going to 30 min abs class and a 1 hour strength training class
F: PT
S: Class (aerobic and strength training)
S: Class (aerobic and strength traing)
I have also been tracking my calories..while not perfect I consume bt 1200-1700 calories
So why am I not losing weight? It just doesn't make sense..surely I am buring more calories than I am consuming for a given week..
So if anyone can offer any advice that would be lovely..Do I need MORE cardio? and less strenght training. |

Some questions for you...
How tall are you? Male or female? What's your current weight? What was your fitness level prior to starting at your gym? What would you say your average daily caloric intake is over a week's time? What is PT? |

I'm female, 5'4 and currently weigh 154 lbs. My fitness level was that I walked most of the time for exercise so my heart rate was really never elevated like it is now when I exercise. But before joining the gym I'd quit walking for about 3 months..
I am trying to average about 1500 calories per day. But my menu for today is barely over 1200 which is about what I eat on SB.
PT = personal training sessions |

There is a similar thread here right now. Try walking away from the scales and start working off your measurements.
Muscle weigh more than fat for it's capacity. Are your clothes getting looser? Is your body more toned? |

| Trust me honey, you're losing fat instead of muscle now. With that amount of working out and clean eating the scale is not showing your true results. I was losing a little here and there and eating basically the same as I do now before I started exercising 7 months ago. I have lost 1 pound since then and it's probably a fluke at best. I am more into maintenance and I can see a huge difference in my butt, legs , waist, just about everywhere. It's fat that I've gotten rid of and I know it. even if the scale doesn't say it. |

| well i think all your working out is wonderful, but you are working out way to much, and you need a rest day. pick one or two days and do not workout on those days. i know it sounds crazy but i was the same way as you, until about 2 months ago when i started to train for a 1/2 marathon and the training schedule had me take two days off! i thought this was nuts but your body needs to recover and it has actually aided in my weight loss. also, make sure your eating enough calories for your metabolism to function properly especially since you are working out so hard. i am surprised your pt has not discussed this with you. |

doing exercise just burn extra fat, and no mean to lose weight. :D
Maybe the gaining weight is your muscle, so your body will be more fit.
I think so. |

| i don't think you're exercising too much. looks like a great plan to me. a single rest day is important, or even a day of low[er] intensity at least, but it's certainly not way too much. |

| i dont think youre working out too much either. but one day off (or lighter, as a-rod said) is important, and having that rest day can be almost as important as a workout day. |

Thank you for your comments. I am currently eating P1 foods and since last comment I have lost 6lbs..so I am now down to 152 according to my doctor's scale. I am starting P2 this week and plan to reach my goal by adding more cardio (running and walking) and with the Personal Trainer and his classes. My goal is around 125 or 130. So I still have a way to go but thanks for the comments.
I feel lighter and better than ever. Patience is the key as well as journaling all of my food intake. |
