Bob, give me hope that this 51 year old youngster can have one hot body!

I'll be 52 in less than a month and am running in the size 2-4 range. I'm 5' 5". Don't know that I'm hot. But barring physical problems, age is just a number.

Bob, give me hope that this 51 year old youngster can have one hot body! 51 - you are still a kid! But from an old bugger’s point of view, one's looks, including 'hot body' begins and ends with attitude. All the rest is window dressing. I just wished did not have to grow old to learn that.

at 5'4" when i was wearing size 8 jeans (at 31) i weighed 160 pounds...

i'm just under 5'3" now and the goal for me is about 180... not because I'm lazy but because of how my body is constructed and composed.

the scale means NOTHING...
Thank goodness I haven't started shrinking yet!

Nessa, you may be the only other woman on the planet, then, who is as big boned as I am. Seriously, my ankles are bigger than my DH...and he's 6' tall. :(

Hello Fat Joe,

In order to build muscle you have to take in enough calories to do so. Resistance training is a critical part of having a healthy body. I imagine you are retaining water weight due to the decreased persperation from a decline in cardio.
I would really examine what your goals are. Are you trying to lose weight or build muscle? Rarely can one do both at the same time unless you are really dedicated to consistent interval training for your cardio and consuming enough calories to build muscle. I applaud your increase in push ups and your efforts up to this point. My advice would be to focus on intense interval training for cardio every other day and to work out with light weights/high repititions on the days in between. Hope this helps. I have done the yo-yo cardio/lifting and it can get frustrating. Your goal is not to tack on a bunch of muscle right now. Keep up the cardio, lift light weights, and lose fat. Once you hit the weight goal you can plan the next phase, gaining muscle. A different topic for sure.

I hardly ever weigh myself and I don't have much concern for my weight. What I do care about is how much fat I have and how much muscle, which I can easily tell by looking in the mirror naked, feeling how my clothes fit, and pinching the relevant spots.

I think you should maintain your former cardio level while doing the strength training. You need an adequate level of both.

Heck, I'm 5'4 128 +/- and am wearing size 8 - size 10 in jeans. BUT, I've taken a break from exercising the past couple months and am just getting started again. Last year when I was at the same weight and strength training, I was a size 6. So it definately makes a difference.

I've also read that your body will retain extra water when strength training as it needs it to help repair the muscle - so that could be a factor.

Also, have you adjusted your diet at all? For a while when I was getting pretty intense with my strength training, I started drinking protein shakes (skim milk and protein powder) after my workouts. I also increased my protein through eating extra egg whites and such. I thought I had tweaked my other eating enough to compensate for the calories in the protein shake but I found I stopped losing. Then when I went back to my regular SB way of eating, I started losing again. I figure I get in enough protein - I didn't need the shakes. And that protein powder ain't cheap!
