My friend, who is also severely obese, is going on this diet.

I don't know much about it - or anyone that has tried it. She wants my opinion.

I am all about SB and the principles that it is a WOE, but she is UNFORTUNATELY looking for another quick fix. She said that SB wouldn't work for her because she refuses to eat fruit or veggies.

Just curious about success stories, sustainability, etc.

basically it's old atkins... all protein... minimal calories

I doubt it will work long term for anyone and i can't imagine that it's sustainable.....

Yeah, the people who make Atkins work longterm really do eat fruit, veggies, and starches/grains. They just are very careful about them and eat the right ones with the right foods. (That sounds so familiar.)

If your friend doesn't like fruits or veggies, it might work for her, but I bet she likes grains and starches a whole bunch (just a hunch, not a stereotype). That will make this other plan hard for her over time.

I was a big grain/starch eater pre-SB, but I made SB work in the longterm by replacing those foods with fruits and veggies, as well as good fats, and only slightly more protein. I can't imagine trying to not eat fruits, veggies, or grain/starches for the rest of my life in order to maintain.

I can tell you this....until those who are severely and morbidly obese like I was, get a handle on the "why" of their overeating and deal with that aspect of themselves...every diet will be just another quick fix.

Its a hard road and there are no quick fixes or easy answers...Kimkins is just another offshoot appealing to an already confused group of people who would like to follow atkins but its been so bastardized with so many new versions...that people do become way too carb phobic....and confused on just how to do it "right".

So along comes this Kim person...makes up a bunch of strict rules...ie original atkins at 5 grams carbs day  ... charges people to join her site...she has not even written a book....and they have success because they follow the rules or be humiliated in public.

There are a few ways to follow this plan I know about the K/E aka Kimmer Experiment...this is the one that Jimmy Moore started last week and dropped 18 lbs fast. He originally lost 180 lbs on atkins...and has been maintaining the loss for the past 2-3 yrs...has a big blog, Livin' La Vida LoCarb...but his weight range was from a low of 170 to 215 to a recent high of 248.....This is NOT successful maintenance to me.

There are several threads on Kimkins aka Kimmer aka K/E over at my other forum....I can bring a link if you'd like as you can see the whole plan there if you want.

Bottom line...Like Kimboroni said...I too was a huge starch eater....refined carbs all the way baby!! I was compulsively overeating myself to death....I had to realign my thinking about food in general and be open to learning a new way to think about it all.....thinking about it at all was new for me

I spent years in therapy, getting to the root of my issues...years in OA meetings...lots of reading....so when I got sick and tired of being sick and tired....I was ready to make the biggest change of my life!!

Thanks to the SBD, I was able to make my wish come true. :D

OK...edited to add in this link to a good thread just on Kimkins:

The article in Woman's World said that it was 20. By looking at the sample meal plan in Woman's World it doesn't look all that bad to me.

Here are a few meals from the sample menus:

BREAKFAST:
2 eggs
1/4 cup salsa
3. oz lean ham or other lean protein

LUNCH:
2 cups low-carb soup
1 cup steamed broccoli, 2 tbsp lite dip

DINNER:
4 oz. grilled shrimp, drizzle of low-cal dressing
1 cup raw baby spinach
1/2 cup veggies
2 tablespoons lite dressing

OR

4 oz. chicken or lean pork
1/2 cup sauteed veggies
1 cup romaine lettuce w/ 2 tbsp. lite dressing

OR

3 oz. turkey burger, 2 tbsp lite mayo
1/2 cup grilled veggies
1 cup steamed spinach

SNACKS
1 boiled egg
2 oz. turkey or chicken
1 stick part-skim string cheese

Like I said that really doesn't look all that bad to me.

I think just about on every "diet" you're bound to have some people who are going to criticize other plans based on what worked for THEM. The trick is ignoring all that and finding out what works for YOU! To each his own. Whether it's right or wrong base on your opinion and experiences, it's just that.

If someone can follow a plan like that, lose a ton of weight and get healthier in the process, I say more power to 'em!

I did not see the aritcle tiself and was told by atkins followers that the original atkins was 5 grams a day and that over time he raised it up to 20 on Induction. OWL on Atkins is very similar to phase II of SBD.

Yes...that menu does look doable...there are a few different plans to chose from though and that one looks to be Kimkins itself...not the K/E aka kimmer experiment.

It will be interesting to know how their maintenance is handled...losing all the weight is one thing...keeping it off is a whole 'nother topic.

While snooping around at the link you posted, during maintainance they're allowed between 70-90 carbs per day. Could be kinda easy to maintain if you're used to eating less than 20 per day.

Don't get the K/E thing though. It was my understanding that eating fewer than 20 carbs daily would put you into ketosis anyway. :? I'm guessing it's to get you there quicker.

Thanks for the responses and the link. It was my fear that it was a program like this.

I do agree that it is her diet and her life and if she likes it and it works for her great. However, she just tried the Michael Thurman program about 3 months ago, did it for a week, and failed. The fear lies in that the disappointment of each failed diet adds usually 20+ lbs to her frame. She is over 300 and well on her way to 400. She is a good friend and I am scared for her health.

She was previously a professional dog-walker, a very successful one at that, but now she can't even walk a mile.

But I do know, as with myself, if someone doesn't see it themselves, you can't make them see it. I think that to some people food is as bad as alcohol and if you are an addict, you are usually the last one to see it.

I'm a professional dog walker and was before I lost all the weight....it hurt every step I took before.....now I fly!!
I feel for your friend...deeply. Maybe suggest that she attend some OA meetings...that what helped me the most.

I was actually consdidering trying that, but it looks like an Atkins induction menu, with the only change being the use of "lite" dressing and mayo.

I'm waiting for my copy of South Beach to come, but have been browsing around a bit here.

I wonder, since it says in the linked thread that "Kimmer" is supposed to be for just a few days, what the fuss is about? Or are people trying to LIVe on Stillman's-like eating for long term?

I read about it, but it's just too Atkins like. I like SB better, you get to eat better food.

Judynyc is a professional dog walker, I like this. Walking with my dog in the evening is interesting. I can lose some calories, and so does my dog :P
