Its driving me crazy!! Its takes forever for this place to load.
This was happening on another forum that also has a lot of huge journals!! They decided to close all journals with more than 2000 posts and start part 2 of those journals...it did help a lot!!
We put a link to our new journal on the last page of our old journals...and a link to our old journals on the first page of the new one.
Just an idea!! :D |

What is the cause? Server overload? Too much traffic? The journal thing?
Are there good times of the day and bad times of the day for this problem? It is INSUFFERABLE and I have DLS. I've had to just close the browser and leave completely on several occasions.
I'd appreciate knowing if there's something I can do (like come back another time of the day) to minimize or avoid the problem.
Thanks in advance. |

Maybe someone will answer us....IMO...I think that its all those long over 1000 posts threads... ie: journals.
I like the idea that I put up there...close them down and restart with part 2 of the long ones...over a certain amount of posts.
Hello? Anybody out there? |

It's probably an overload of data (so many posts, member info, etc) and then on top of it peak times when there are a lot of people logged in. :) |

| I'm thinking that the underlying database for this forum must be huge. That doesn't improve performance. |

| This is the best site I have ever found as far as advice, recipes, encouragement, etc. But, this is driving me crazy. I have been kicked off with some sort of message (can't remember it) a couple of times. I have cable internet which is very fast, but it is not fast at all here. I hope this is corrected soon. I love this place! :? |

This is illuminating...

Could not connect to the database
This is an error message I got when I tried to connect earlier, I added the bold face. |

it's a corruption in the SQL (sequel) database... it happens on all message boards.... some more than others..
sadly we have a pretty much absentee landlord... so i'm not even sure if they are aware of the problem...
maltby_gardner I get that error all the time.... sometimes it's just a blip and some days it happens more than it doesn't.
it's a programming function... if you check the board index you will see that the most users ever on was nearly 500 back in 2005 and right now we have less than 100. it's not that there are too many users.
it's a glitch literally in the matrix.
i'm not explaining it well. my database guru is out of the office or i'd ask him for an easier way to explain it. |

| No, that's good enough. I've worked with a lot of databases, so I get what you're saying. It sucks, though. |

The only person that can really answer is this the board owner and I think that subject has been covered. The other problem I see on the moderator panel is the number of bots that are linking to the board. There is a way to limit this but again, that is the board owner's responsibility. |

Thanks for answering Jeff.....my suggestion to start a part 2 of long threads/journals would not require the board owner to be involved though.
Its merely a matter of a mod locking up the old threads and people starting new ones. |

If the delay was only going to the threads with many pages I would agree. However I experience the same delay even going to a new post. The delay is somewhat less if you stay in one forum and browse that way.
I think the database is now fragmented and some type of maintenance needs to be done, sorta like doing a de-frag on your hard drive. From what I have been reading about SQL the problems arise from having auto grow on for the database. This tries to add more disk storage for what is needed and most of the times it is not contiguous disk tracks and that is where the delays come in.
That and having 75-100 google bots crawling in the database most of the time can't help on the connections problem that some people see.
Bottom line, the admin has to get involved. Database maint has to be run and then if she wants to limit journals to a couple hundred pages, that would be a good time to address that. |

Do we know how long it will be before the owner is back to fix it?
I really like this site and want to make it home but it's just too hard waiting for pages to open. I know that I'm looking for other boards and I'm sure others are too... so this site could lose alot of posters if it isn't taken care of soon. |

At the bottom of every page is a link to contact the board admin. There is an open request in the Mods forum for help also.
Don't know what else to tell you, it's equally hard on the Mods to want to try and keep the board clear of spam and annoying posts. Each post deleted takes multiple pages to load for us, I get frustrated and leave after a couple attempts. |
