I was just wondering what everyone thought of the Atkins Diet. I hear it's more beneficial because of the lower carb and higher fat content. I also know people who have lost and kept off a lot of weight with it. I'd appreciate your opinions!

it's not healthy. you need to do south beach instead. atkins says to eat high fats and low carbs but what you need is
GOOD fats and GOOD carbs. you get those on South Beach. |

It doesn't matter. I'm done with this. I'm going back to Atkins, it's healthy and it works for ME. I've been on this diet for 14 days, and I feel like crap! I should have never left Atkins, it's the most wonderful way to eat. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go eat some roast beef with FULL FAT cheese! Ta-Ta!

I did Atkins for quite a while and lost 55lbs on it. If you read the book and follow it, its honestly not vastly different than SB, even though there is a misconception that you will only be eating steak and cheese.
You begin by eliminating most carbs for a 2 week Induction to end your cravings (sound familiar?), and the book stresses the need to eat a lot of veggies every day. High fat cheeses are limited to only a few oz per day, and as you proceed through the "rungs" you slowly add back nuts, berries, fruits, dairy, and eventually all grains. It really is pretty similar. The only big diff w/SB is that you have your choice of what fruits/grains to add back when you reach phase 2, whereas Atkins is more structured.
People don't read the book and give it a bad rap. I read a story about a guy trying to sue the Atkins corp b/c he "went on Atkins" and ate pastrami and low carb cheesecake day in and day out and had to get heart surgery. Needless to say he lost...
The book really does emphasize the need for veggies and a balanced diet. I am trying SB b/c I feel I just need to try something new, and b/c it allows a little more variety rather quickly - ie a wheat bun on my turkey dog in a few weeks wont knock me off the diet.
PS- I thought you can have full fat cheese on SB as long as its under certain grams per serving? |

you can and that magic number is 6g. our feta is full fat and only 4g per 1 oz serving so we use it often.
as for the NEW Atkins I agree it's similar to SBD. But the Atkins from when I was a teen is very different. I have both the original and the new versions in my diet book collection at home. |

Ah ok, I am guessing I had the revised book. I see differences in what I eat compared to when I did Atkins, but I guess it depends on the mindset of the dieter.
I watched Honey We're Killing the Kids a few times, and I think that sparked the necessary change in my mindset LoL. |
