I have been hypothyroid for about 13 years and I have struggled with weight issues ever since. The only times I was able to lose weight was when I got a job that required me to be active the entire 8 hours. Whenever I became sedentary I gained a bunch of weight and could not lose it no matter what. Dropping my calories to a extremely low level, doing weight lifting and walking an hour everyday, weight watchers, atkins, calorie counting, Body For Life. Nothing would make me lose weight until I moved ALL day long.
I lost my job in October and have gained back 47 lbs. I have been dieting and dieting and I cannot lose the weight. Now I am having other symptoms that are telling me my Thyroid meds need adjusting. I made an appointment for Monday and I plan to ask my doctor to put me on Armour. Is any one else here on it ? How are you doing? How is your weight loss going. I want to hear what everyone else who is Hypo has done to help them lose weight. I am extremely discouraged and I need some hope!
Thanks! |

I have Grave's Disease and due to treatment I am now very hypothyroid, nearly zero thyroid function. I did not have much problem losing weight but had problems just recently being over medicated. I was taking 225 micrograms of thyroid replacement meds (first Synthroid and now levathroxine) when I should have been taking 175 micrograms. The problems were caused me losing ~60 pounds and that I was taking the meds without consideration of when I was eating breakfast, what I was eating for breakfast, when I was taking my vitamins and finally when I was taking a mineral & fiber supplements.
With my physicians advice I am now on an every 3 month thyroid level check. I do not any food for 1 hour after taking my thyroid meds. When I do have breakfast (usually 2-3 hours after the meds) I make sure that the meal does not have any walnuts or soy in it. I first take my vitamins, fiber and mineral suppliments 4 hours after taking the meds. After this time, I feel it is okay to have walnuts and soy products if desired.
Following this routine, I have now experienced a great feeling of energy and well being.
For example my week day routine is 4:15 AM take thyroid meds and leave for the gym. Do a 5:30 AM class at the gym. After the gym I head to work and eat breakfast while reviewing my email at ~7:15 AM. At ~8:15 AM I take my supplements and vitamins. It has become such a habit that even on weekends I am up at ~4:00 AM to take the thyroid meds and then head back to bed. |

| Thank you so much for this thread. I recently found out I have Hypothyroidism and reading 'Stop The Thyroid Madness' has helped me understand more about my condition. I have a Doctor's appointment in 2 weeks so it will be nice to know what I am talking about. Thanks again! |

having hypthyroidism and trying to lose weight really stinks!
from June 07 to Dec 07 I lost 40 lbs. My thyroid went out of wack in January and it's been wreaking havoc on me ever since. I've gained 34 of those lbs back and feel helpless and depressed.
I'm glad I found a group I can share my woes with! |
